Grade 5

Reading
This week, we finished reading Dirrarn and reflected on the important themes, characters, and events from the story. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions and shared their opinions about the text using evidence to support their ideas. We have now begun reading Waves: For Those Who Travel Across the Sea, an inspiring story that explores migration, journeys, and belonging. As we read, students will continue developing their comprehension skills by making connections, predictions, and inferences.
Writing
In Writing, students have begun exploring the features of non-fiction narratives. We have discussed how factual information can be combined with engaging storytelling techniques to inform and entertain readers. Students are learning to organise events in a logical sequence while including accurate details and descriptive language. Over the coming weeks, they will plan, draft, and publish their own non-fiction narratives.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been investigating chance and probability through a variety of hands-on experiments. Using counters, dice, and playing cards, they conducted trials and recorded the outcomes to identify patterns and likelihoods. Students compared their experimental results with expected outcomes and discussed why results may differ. These activities have helped build their understanding of probability using practical, real-world examples.
Reminder: Parent-Teacher Interviews are approaching, and we encourage all families to book a time if they have not already done so.
