Grade 2

Literacy

This fortnight, students have been developing their reading comprehension and fluency skills by focusing on asking questions before, during and after reading a text. Asking questions helps students engage more deeply with what they are reading, make predictions, clarify their understanding and reflect on key ideas. Through a range of shared, guided and independent reading activities, students have practised generating thoughtful questions to support their comprehension.

In Spelling, students have been learning about different letter combinations that represent the same sound. They explored the /ur/ sound, focusing on the spelling patterns irer and ur, as well as the /ow/ sound represented by ou and ow. Students participated in word sorts, spelling investigations and games to strengthen their understanding of these patterns.

In Grammar, students have been learning about verbs and how they help describe actions, thoughts, feelings and speech. They were introduced to four different types of verbs: moving verbssaying verbsfeeling verbs and thinking verbs. Through discussions, sentence-writing tasks and songs students practised identifying and using a variety of verbs to make their writing more detailed and engaging.

Maths

This week, students have been developing their number sense by learning to add and subtract one and two-digit numbers using an empty number line. They have practised solving problems both with and without regrouping, building confidence in selecting efficient strategies and explaining their mathematical thinking.

Through hands-on activities, collaborative learning experiences, and problem-solving tasks, students have strengthened their understanding of place value and the relationship between addition and subtraction. The use of empty number lines has supported students in visualising number patterns, making jumps in tens and ones, and applying regrouping strategies accurately.

Writing

Over the past two weeks in Writing, we have been exploring The Lorax and learning how authors use language to make stories more interesting. Students have been identifying figurative language and how it helps create images and feelings for the reader. We have also been practising using conjunctions such as although and even though to extend our sentences.

Students have been asking and answering questions about the text and illustrations, as well as learning to recognise the difference between statements and questions to deepen their understanding.
