Wellness Week

This week has been a big one at the College with Wellness Week in full flight. Wellness Week has grown to be one of the most fun and most anticipated weeks of the year, with staff v students volleyball, the annual Staff v Year 12s Lip Sync Battle (rudely, but convincingly, won by the students again), bake sales, lunchtime disco, BBQs and live music, all culminating in College Has Got Talent tomorrow night. It’s a big one, but great fun and very well timed to provide some levity and humour at a time when both are needed and welcome.

My thanks to the Student Representative Council and Kristen Waldron for their organisation of the week and facilitating these great activities across the school.

The Wellness Week bake sale fundraiser was held on Tuesday to raise money for the Watarrka Foundation, which supports the Lilla community and others in the Watarrka region. Our Year 10s will return to Lilla in July this year for their cultural immersion program. We’re privileged to have a strong and growing connection to Lilla and to be able to not only assist the community, but to learn from them about Luritja culture and country.

National Reconciliation Week – All In.

In our small way, this relationship with Lilla is a small step towards reconciliation. This year’s National Reconciliation Week began yesterday and runs until 3 June. This year’s theme is All In which Reconciliation Australia explains as:

...a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

As a non-Indigenous person, understanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and the very real inequities that these groups have faced over generations is as important as it is challenging. We must reinforce the message especially to young people that learning more and seeking better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are positive and generative acts that benefit all Australians. I look forward to discussions with the current Year 10 group when they return from Lilla about all they have learned.
