Year 8 Woodwork Class Update
Students in the woodwork class have been busy developing their practical skills and workshop knowledge this term. Before beginning their major practical projects, students completed detailed planning activities to help prepare for safe and accurate workshop practices.
A strong focus has been placed on correct measuring and marking-out techniques using a variety of measuring equipment, including steel rulers and try squares. Students learned the importance of accuracy and precision when preparing timber for cutting and assembly.
During practical lessons, students were introduced to a range of hand tools, including the tenon saw and coping saw. The tenon saw was used for accurate straight cuts, while the coping saw allowed students to create curved and detailed shapes in timber. Students practised safe handling techniques and learned how to maintain control and accuracy while cutting.
Students also gained experience using sanding machinery to improve the finish and presentation of their projects. Emphasis was placed on workshop safety procedures, including correct machine setup, safe operating distances, and the use of personal protective equipment.
Throughout the term some students demonstrated excellent enthusiasm and creativity while developing confidence in using workshop tools and equipment. It has been pleasing to see those students improving their practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of safe workshop procedures.
