Year 9 Japanese Students Experience Japanese Food

Our Year 9 Japanese students are currently studying a unit on fast food, where they are learning how to describe different foods and talk about their experiences of eating them in Japanese. As part of this unit, students had an exciting opportunity to participate in a Japanese food tasting experience during class.

They sampled a variety of traditional Japanese foods, including natto (fermented soybeans known for their strong smell and sticky texture), tsukemono (traditional Japanese pickled vegetables), umeboshi (salted pickled plums with a distinctive sour flavour), senbei (crispy Japanese rice crackers) and more!

Many students were surprised by the unique flavours and textures of the foods they tried, and they enthusiastically shared their opinions and reactions in Japanese. This hands-on activity gave students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture while building their confidence in using new vocabulary and expressions learned in class.

It was wonderful to see students stepping outside their comfort zones, trying unfamiliar foods, and fully engaging in this authentic cultural experience.

Japan Club Continues to Grow!

Japan Club has become increasingly active this term, with a consistently strong number of students attending each week - which has been wonderful to see!

This term, students have enjoyed participating in a variety of fun and engaging cultural activities. These included making koinobori (traditional Japanese carp streamers displayed to celebrate Children’s Day), learning how to use chopsticks correctly, creating Japanese-style calendars, practising shodō (Japanese calligraphy), and drawing manga characters. These hands-on activities have provided students with valuable opportunities to explore different aspects of Japanese culture in a creative and enjoyable way while also connecting with other students who share an interest in Japan. If you have never joined Japan Club before, please check Google Classroom (available on COGS) to see what activities are coming up, and come along to join the fun!
