SUPPORTING STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THEIR FUTURE PATHWAYS
At St Joseph’s College, we understand how important it is for students to feel supported and confident as they explore their future pathways, whether that involves university, TAFE, apprenticeships, traineeships, or entering the workforce.
Our Careers Team is committed to guiding students every step of the way, from early career exploration through to making informed decisions about life after school.
In Years 9 and 10, students begin exploring career possibilities through engaging activities, career quizzes, classroom discussions, and resources available on our Careers Website. Through valued partnerships with NMLLEN and La Trobe University, Year 10 students have also participated in activities such as the Career Pitch program and virtual work experience opportunities providing valuable insights into a range of occupations and industries.
For students in VCE and VCE VM, personalised one-on-one career counselling meetings are offered throughout Terms 1 and 2. These conversations help students identify their strengths, interests, and goals while exploring the many pathways available to them after secondary school.
Our Work Experience Program continues to provide students with invaluable opportunities to connect with professionals across a diverse range of industries, including engineering, nursing, veterinary science, law, and many others. We are incredibly grateful to the local businesses and organisations that generously host our students. These placements allow students to experience the realities of the workplace, develop professional skills, seek advice from industry experts, and gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths. Often, these experiences provide students with greater clarity and renewed motivation as they work towards their future goals.
This semester, senior students were given the opportunity to attend the Victorian Careers Expo and participated in university tours of La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus and Victoria University’s Footscray Campus. A select group of students also attended the ICON Centre’s Girls in Physics excursion, exploring exciting opportunities in science-related careers. Additional experiences included the International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife celebrations hosted by La Trobe University, as well as the La Trobe Connect & Grow: Social Work Industry Day. These events provide students with valuable opportunities to engage directly with industry professionals and learn about a wide variety of study and career pathways.
We have also welcomed a range of guest speakers throughout the semester, including representatives from Mildura Base Hospital, the Australian Defence Force, Monash University, The University of Melbourne, Deakin University, and CitiPower & Powercor. Their insights and experiences have helped students gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities available to them beyond school.
To keep families informed, our Careers Newsletter is distributed monthly to students in Years 10 to 12 and is also available to the wider college community through the College website and Careers page.
We are proud to partner with students and families as they explore possibilities, build confidence, and make informed decisions about their futures. Through strong connections with industry, tertiary providers, and the wider community, we strive to ensure every student has the opportunity to discover what is possible and pursue a pathway that is right for them.
