This week I would like to give you some activities so that you could help your child or children at home complete some catching practice.

In a recent news report there was evidence to suggest primary school aged childrens ability to demonstate their fundamental motor skills had declined. They linked the Covid lockdowns as possible causes to this.

I have noticed during PE lessons some students ability to catch a ball is not what it should be. Being able to catch a ball, throw, run, dodge, leap, strike etc are basic fundamental motor skills that children should be able to be resonably proficient at by certain ages. This varies of course with ability.

If you have any spare time at home, it would be great if every now and again you could have some catching practice. There are 6 basic steps in that are evident in catching. I have included the criteria and a short video, which I think really explains the catching process and stages very well. Hopefully you can have some fun with your children and help to improve some catching skills.

Thank you

Barry Rees

These are the steps in sequence and the ages they should attain catching skills>

Music and Performing Arts

Hello/Assalamu Alaikum/Hola, Nǐ Hǎo, Ciao, Kon'nichiwa everybody! A warm welcome to Term 2! Lots happening again this term.

Grade 5/6

Have been working on their Performing Arts Project for the first half of the Term. They are making 2-4 minute movies/videos individually or in small groups using the iPads. Students can pick between a news report, instructional video, short film or a documentary.

They are working on using the correct conventions for a screenplay including all capitals for who is speaking and centring the script like:

JOEL

Welcome today’s newsletter.

PERSON 2

What is going to be in it today?

They are also adding a shot list and editing their footage including adding music and voice overs. This week and next, we are exploring the rule of thirds to record better framed shots using the iPads in landscape mode. We are looking at using an image stabiliser for less shaky videos (a music stand) and smooth pans with our arms locked in a fully extended position with a focus on slow breathing.

Grade 3 and 4 are doing music for the first half of the term, starting on the ukuleles focusing on the parts and string order of GCEA from top to bottom (using the mnemonic device : Good Children Eat Apples). In the second half of the term, we will focus on Performing Arts.

Students are looking at Ukulele TAB to play Smoke on the Water on one string and then moving onto the Simpsons theme over all 4 strings. They are learning that the numbers represent the fret number (0 meaning playing without fingers on the fretboard).

We are looking at the chords Am and C using simple strumming patterns before we look at specific songs to play.

Grade 1 and 2 are working on Performing Arts, creating storyboards (cartoons with different characters to act out), as well as making cut out characters to portray different characteristics and manipulating their voice to imitate fictional or non fictional people. Grade 2s are additionally filming their pieces using the iPads.

Prep have been making finger puppet characters to create short plays with. They have also been designing characters from a template to act in front of the screen with a focus on speaking to the audience.
