Reading in our classrooms

Literacy Focus: Reading Fluency, Comprehension and Deep Thinking

Students have been highly engaged in our reading lessons with a strong focus on developing confidence, comprehension, word consciousness, and deeper thinking when reading a range of texts.

FLUENCY

A part of our fluency this term has involved using the Reading Comprehension Roles during class discussions and text analysis. Students have been practising thinking like active readers by taking on different roles while reading, including:

  • questioning
  • visualising
  • inferring
  • synthesising
  • summarising
  • identifying important information

These roles help students move beyond simply reading words on a page and encourage them to think critically about what a text is really saying. During our fluency, students are becoming more confident in explaining their ideas, justifying their thinking with evidence, and discussing texts collaboratively with their peers.

WHOLE

Throughout our literacy lessons, our focus has varied across several important areas, including:

  • decoding unfamiliar words using a range of reading strategies
  • improving reading fluency and expression
  • comprehending both fiction and non-fiction texts
  • building vocabulary
  • identifying key ideas and the author's purpose

Students have explored how different types of texts are structured and how readers adjust their thinking depending on whether they are reading a narrative, an informative article, a persuasive text, or a report.

SMALL

These have included activities that challenge students with:

  • letter (sound patterns, spelling features, syllables and decoding)
  • word (vocabulary and word meaning)
  • sentence (fluency, punctuation, phrasing and meaning)
  • text (comprehension, inference and analysis)

These short and focused activities are designed to strengthen students’ overall reading comprehension by helping them connect decoding skills with deeper understanding.

BOOK CLUB

In our explicit teaching groups, students have been participating in a “Book Club”, where they unpack and discuss texts chapter by chapter within their groups. These sessions have focused heavily on:

  • discussing character actions and motivations
  • identifying themes and important events
  • making predictions
  • clarifying misunderstandings
  • using evidence from the text to support ideas

The smaller group setting has allowed students to engage in rich discussions, ask questions, and develop confidence sharing their thinking in a supportive environment.

One of our key goals this term is to help students understand that strong reading is not just about speed, but rather it is about reading with accuracy, expression, understanding, and purpose. Students are continuing to build their ability to think deeply about texts and communicate their ideas clearly.

How families can support at home

Families can support reading development by:

  • encouraging regular reading at home
  • listening to their child read aloud
  • discussing books, articles or current events together
  • asking questions such as:
    • “What clues helped you work that word out?”
    • “What do you think the author wants the reader to understand?”
    • “Can you summarise this chapter?”
    • “What prediction do you have next?”

Regular conversations about reading greatly strengthen fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence.

We are extremely proud of the effort students are showing during reading sessions and the thoughtful discussions taking place in classrooms each day.
