Rolling into Operations: Learning Through Production
Operations Management in Practice
Our Year 12 Business Management students recently rolled up their sleeves—literally—as part of their Unit 3 study on Operations Management. To bring key concepts to life, students worked through a production line process by making their own batches of rum balls. While the activity was fun (and delicious), it was also an opportunity to deepen their understanding of inputs, processes, and outputs, along with important considerations such as quality control, efficiency, and workplace hygiene.
Students began by planning their operations system, determining the materials required, allocating roles, and considering the most efficient workflow. Throughout the activity, students monitored their process, made adjustments, and reflected on how real-world businesses must constantly re-evaluate their operations to ensure smooth production.
A key focus of the task was on quality, where each group had to produce high quality rum balls that could be sold in a café. At the end, they compared their outputs to their standards and evaluated their overall performance. (From the photos, below which batch would you consider selling in a café?)
Not only did students gain hands-on insight into the complexities of production, but they also strengthened their problem solving skills, especially when their teacher accidentally brought almond meal instead of desiccated coconut, as one of the ingredients. And yes—they did enjoy sampling the results of their hard work!
