Assistant Principals' Report

Hello and welcome to our newsletter item for this week.
World Maths Day Wednesday 25th March 2026
On Wednesday, it was World Maths Day. This is a day celebrated across the world to raise awareness of mathematics. Mathematics is more than numbers or equations confined to a textbook -it impacts everyday life, and that’s why maths is so important. It is a language, a way of thinking, and a critical skill that equips students with logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Maths is a significant part of everyday life.
We know school age students can also feel anxiety around maths. Math anxiety is a feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear that interferes with manipulating numbers and solving mathematical problems, affecting both academic performance and daily life.
We have also included an article from the Victorian Academy of Teaching titled, ‘Understanding Maths Anxiety- A helpful guide for parents and carers.’ Tips and tricks for supporting your child to build confidence in maths.
If you are looking for some things to do at home with your family, please see below;
I have included a link to ABC education which has some interesting games, ideas and videos for families.

I have also included a link to a site with some maths challenges for a sunny or rainy day or just any day in between.

Enrichment Clubs
This term we have had a range of clubs operating across the week here at HPS. Chess, Reading, Yoga and Grateful Club just to name a few. These clubs are provided to enrich the school curriculum with extra-curricular opportunities that extend children's knowledge and understanding and help to improve their skills in a range of artistic, creative and sporting opportunities. Lunchtime clubs are offered to all students. This promotes inclusion and enables students to socialise and connect with peers from different classes and levels across the school. It is also an opportunity to share a common interest with other HPS students.
Lunchtime clubs can have benefits for students and the whole school community, including:
- improved peer-to-peer and staff-student relationships and wellbeing
- a sense of personal empowerment and student voice
- development of social and emotional skills
positive school climate and increased student sense of safety
Next term we are looking at offering clubs once again throughout the week. We will be gathering ideas from the students around what sorts of clubs they would like the staff to be offering. We would like to take the opportunity to thank our staff for all their hard work planning, preparing and facilitating the clubs across the term.
Have a great weekend and week ahead.
