Term 1 2025
Physical Education
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new students and those returning to Cheltenham PS in 2025. We look forward to an exciting year in Physical Education and Sport in 2025. I'd like to acknowledge Mr Stafford for filling in for the first two weeks of term while I was on parental leave, the students thoroughly enjoyed having Calum Stafford kick off the year in PE. It's great to be back and a big thank you to all the well wishes I've received from the Cheltenham PS community regarding our newest addition.
In 2025, we will continue to run our PE and Sport programs on a weekly basis. Each student will participate in one Physical Education lesson and one Sport or PMP session. During Physical Education, students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills in a range of activities. While during their Sport or PMP programs, students will work in large groups to complete a variety of movement challenges and games, incorporating their fundamental movement skills into modified and major games.
Foundation:
This term, Foundation students will explore the grounds and facilities at Cheltenham Primary School and participate in a range of activities to assist in developing confidence in PE. These will include following directions, working in pairs and small groups and learning to use equipment safely. Foundation students also learn a variety of games to develop their fundamental movement skills.
Years 1 & 2
During Term 1, we will focus on revisiting and improving the fundamental movement skills including throwing, catching, dribbling, running, dodging and kicking. Students will perform these skills in a variety of settings including skill drills, modified games and collaboratively with a partner or small group.
Years 3 & 4
Students in Year 3 and 4 will look to transfer their fundamental movement skills to game sense activities in a range of modified and major games including Tee Ball, Basketball and Soccer. Students will be able to scaffold their skills by using a variety of equipment and working in small groups during modified game play. The focus will be on ensuring each student has the opportunity to refine their skills in isolation during skills drills and developing those skills during game play as each lesson progresses.
Years 5 & 6
During Term 1, our senior students will be working in pairs and small groups while participating in a range of sports and activities. They will explore the concepts of striking and fielding games through our Softball unit. Requiring them to showcase their underarm pitching, overarm throwing, fielding and striking skills during game play.
Students will be given opportunities to develop their offensive and defensive skills during our Soccer and Netball units later in the term. Students will learn to play a variety of positions, refine their fundamental skills and work collaboratively to ensure team success.
House Sport
Throughout the year, students in Year 3-6 will have the opportunity to participate in House Sports Carnival for Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletics. On these days, students will participate in a range of events and earn points for their house. They will also be used to assist in selecting our teams for District Sports.
Cross Country - Years 3-6 students
This year, House Cross Country will be conducted at Cheltenham Park on Friday 28th March. We will be looking for parent helpers to assist on the day as course marshals. If you are able to assist (must have a current WWC check) please contact Mr Penny.

Students in Years 3-6 will have the opportunity to represent the school in a variety of extra-curricular activities including Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletics. Our District Swimming Trials were held late last year, and the district team will compete at Mentone Grammar on Monday 3rd March. Congratulations to all those who made the team. The event will be posted shortly on Compass.
Our Year 5 and 6 students kicked off our Interschool Sport season a few weeks ago. Students are assigned to one of four sports and play a round of grading games before participating in a Lightening Premiership at the end of the term. Sports for Summer include Cricket, Tee Ball, Tennis and Volleyball. Good luck to all students participating in Term 1.
