Food Technology
Year 8 Food students had a fantastic start to their practical sessions, making rainbow pancake skewers. This activity introduced them to key kitchen skills, including safe food handling, measuring and weighing ingredients, basic knife techniques, and proper cleaning and hygiene practices. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and engagement, with outstanding results—none of which made it home, proving just how much they enjoyed it!
Throughout the semester, students will explore a variety of meals, including breakfasts, snacks, lunches, and family dinners. The focus will be on developing practical cooking skills while deepening their understanding of nutrition, particularly the role of fibre and saturated fats in a balanced diet. Each practical session will challenge them to make informed food choices, experiment with flavours, and build confidence in the kitchen.
Textiles
Year 7 Textiles have started their Supermarket Stitch Project with a burst of enthusiasm, bringing a wealth of innovative ideas to the table. With such creativity on display, it looks like our supermarket collection will be more diverse and exciting than ever! Students have been thoughtfully selecting products to replicate, considering colour, branding, and packaging details to make their designs as realistic as possible.
As they progress, they will begin experimenting with hand embroidery techniques, refining their stitching skills, and incorporating applique to bring their fabric food items to life. Over the coming weeks, they will work toward constructing their final pieces, developing not only their technical abilities but also their confidence and attention to detail.
Well done to Year 7 for such a fantastic start—your hard work and enthusiasm are already setting the stage for an impressive collection!
Year 9 Textiles students began the semester by creating a drawstring bag, a practical and sustainable solution for storing their upcoming projects. Through this task, they explored the value and purpose of cotton in the clothing industry, gaining insight into its sustainability and versatility.
Building on these foundational skills, students will now move on to designing and sewing their own custom shorts. This project will challenge them to consider sizing, fit, material selection, and sewing machine techniques, allowing them to develop their technical skills while creating a wearable, personalised garment. It’s an exciting step forward, and we can’t wait to see their creativity come to life!
VCE PD&T Unit 1 students have been working hard to conduct essential research for their custom teacher bag project. Each student has selected a staff member from GSC as their client and is designing a tailored storage solution in either textiles or timber. This project not only challenges their design and technical skills but also emphasises collaboration, as Unit 1 focuses on teamwork and navigating design constraints and considerations. Throughout the process, Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Tavares Green have been working closely to ensure both timber and textiles students gain valuable, well-rounded learning experiences.
Friday afternoons in E13 have become a highlight, with students enjoying afternoon tea while deepening their understanding of core subject content.
It’s been an incredible start, and we can’t wait to see their final creations!
