School-wide Positive Behaviour Support

SWPBS (School-wide Positive Behaviour Support) is globally recognised, evidence-based framework designed to help schools create positive, safe, and fair settings where students and teachers can thrive. It focuses on teaching and encouraging positive behaviour, supporting all students, and providing extra help to those who need it. By doing this, SWPBS helps improve behaviour, wellbeing, and academic success.
It also supports teachers by giving them strategies to manage classrooms effectively, reduce disruptions, and spend more time on teaching and learning.
Schools implementing SWPBS:
- use proven strategies to meet the needs of all students
- work with students, families, and communities to ensure rules and practices are fair and inclusive
- regularly review and improve their practices
- build expertise in behaviour support among staff
- form teams to guide and maintain the framework
- use data to identify issues and solve problems
- provide training and coaching to help teachers improve.
In Term 1 2025 Gisborne Secondary College has embarked on several programs to build and improve on the work to date in the area of School Wide Positive Behaviours.
All staff at the College are working in professional learning communities on projects based on the High Impact Wellbeing Strategies (HIWS) published by the Department of Education for ‘Building Student Relationships’.
The SWPBS Guiding Team have also embarked on training to improve ‘Classroom Systems’. Once completed these staff will then share the knowledge and expertise throughout the wider staff so that they can improve practices within their own classroom spaces.
