At South Melbourne Primary School students use digital technologies as teaching and learning tools. We see digital technologies as valuable resources and acknowledge they must be used responsibly. This week, the Prep students were so excited to receive their new iPads! We have been using them in class to practise our new learning programs including Mathseeds and Seesaw. We are so proud of how students have utilised their new learning tools responsibly and taken fantastic care of them. We are so excited for the amazing year of learning ahead. Well done, Preps!
This week, we had a visit from Fun Fit! Our students had the opportunity to participate in a session of Hula Hooping! Students were encouraged to utilise every body part and think about the different ways they could move as they were coached through different exercises. This visit complemented what we have been learning so far in our current Science Curriculum topic, the Human Body.
Our Year 2 students have been enjoying our science unit: Kids in the Kitchen. They have explored the Food Circle to understand the different food groups. Students investigated their own lunchboxes to see what food groups they had been eating throughout the day. This investigation can be found on Seesaw.
The highlight of our science unit so far has to be making mashed potatoes! Students used their muscles to mash potatoes. All of our Year 2 students seemed to be big fans of salt, which they were eager to add to their mashed potatoes. There were many smiles when they tucked into the food they had made. The students are well on their way to becoming master chefs in the kitchen!
This term in Personal and Social Capabilities, our Year 3 students have been focusing on the important skill of collaboration—and they’ve been absolutely shining!
Through a range of fun group activities and challenges, the students have been learning how to work together effectively, showing incredible teamwork, kindness, and respect for one another. It’s been heartwarming to see them support their peers, listen to different ideas, and problem-solve together.
We are so proud of their efforts and can’t wait to see how these collaboration skills continue to grow throughout the year!
This term, our Year 4 students have dived into 'Cloud Busting', a captivating novel written in verse. Inspired by the book's poetic style, we explored different types of poetry, including writing our own haikus and limericks. The creativity on display was incredible!
Building on our literacy skills, we also went on a classroom hunt to identify dependent and independent clauses. It was fantastic to see students collaborating, discussing, and applying their knowledge in a fun and engaging way.
We’re so proud of all the wonderful learning happening in Year 4!
Year 5 had an amazing time on their excursion to the South Melbourne Market! As they walked through the busy stalls, they were amazed by all the delicious food, from fresh-baked pastries to sizzling street food. They also loved looking at the beautiful handmade crafts and seeing the creativity of local artists. The students had the chance to chat with shopkeepers, asking great questions about how they run their businesses. They came away full of ideas and inspiration for their own market project at school. A huge thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who helped make the day run so smoothly—we couldn’t have bargained for better support! It was a fun and exciting day, filled with learning and exploring.
Year 6 students have snapped back into routine as our curriculum learning is in full swing. Students have made an "All About Me" poster in preparation for meeting their Prep Buddies. As part of our Passion Project this term, we are so excited to form connections with the youngest members of our school and begin fostering meaningful mentorships. This will strengthen our sense of connectedness and celebrate our school value of Community. We look forward to another fantastic fortnight of learning in Year 6!
