Secondary 9/10

 9/10A

Secondary 9/10A has had an incredibly active and engaging term! Our students have been exploring "One Body for Life" through exciting opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

We've ventured to Binnak Park, enjoyed hands-on incursions and conducted fun classroom experiments.

A highlight was definitely the smoothie-making sessions, where students bravely tried (and enjoyed!) a variety of fruits and vegetables, including spinach.

We're also proud of their participation in electives, STEAM, and physical activities like inter-school sports, bowling, gym, dancing, and walks.

We're all looking forward to continuing this momentum in Term 2!

9/10B

Term 1 has been full of learning and growth for Secondary 9/10B students. Our three-week Start-Up Program helped everyone transition back to school successfully.

We enjoyed our 9/10 section BBQ at Binnak Park, providing great social opportunities outside the classroom. Two Mad Food Science incursions taught students about fruits, vegetables, and reading food labels for healthier choices.

In Discovery, we explored different nutrients and their importance for our bodies.

In Maths, we focused on addition, subtraction, place value, and shapes through engaging activities.

We're proud of how hard students have worked on developing both social and academic skills this term.

9/10 C

As always, Term 1 is a jam packed term full of all kinds of events and activities. The students have been busy in class, developing their numeracy and literacy skills as well as delving into the world of nutrition and healthy eating. The numeracy focuses this term have been Place Value, Addition and Shapes. Outside of the classroom, students have been busy at their electives, Fit For Life and STEAM sessions.

STEAM

We are part of a STEAM group on Fridays which goes to Melbourne Polytechnic. Roman, Iyad and Justin did a podcast about the Carlton Blues. We talked about how many premierships they have won, their players and where they train and play.

Fit For Life

We always walk to the bus stop in the morning to get the bus to Watermarc Gym. We go to the gym to get fit, so we do not get obesity and to hang out with friends and to lift weights. Trent is so strong because he can lift 190kg on the leg press at the gym!

Social Competencies

In Social Comp this year, we have been learning about body systems and drug education. We’ve learnt about legal and illegal drugs. Examples of legal drugs for us are cough medicine and Red Bull. Illegal drugs for us are Vaping and Alcohol.

Binnak Park

In week 2, we went to Binnak Park with all the 9/10s. We had a BBQ and Jake helped cook more sausages whilst James had a rest in the hammock. Jake played on the spiderweb with Lyndon and James swung on the swing. We had so much fun at Binnak Park.

‘The Root Cause’ Incursions

In week 4, we had an incursion called ‘The Root Cause’. It was very fun. We learnt about healthy eating and what you can do to do healthy eating. I learnt things that I have not learnt before.

For day 2, which was in week 7, we learnt about the nutritional information and what is in each processed food that we get from the supermarket. The incursion was very informative and very easy to understand. I enjoyed the incursions very much.

Smoothie Making

In week 5, we made smoothies. We used lots of different fruits and vegetables, like apples, bananas, dragon fruit, berries, cucumber, celery and spinach. We then topped it up with milk. We blended all our fruit and it smelt yummy. It tasted sweet and nice.

9/10D

Term 1 in Secondary 9/10D has been jam packed with fun and different learning experiences.  We began the year with lots of getting to know you activities including a BBQ at Binnak Park, trivia Kahoots and water colour backed self-portraits.

As part of our Discovery unit ‘One Body for Life’, we have taken part in two interactive Mad Food Science incursions, where students investigated what a healthy diet should include. We learnt that in order to get lots of fibre, vitamins and minerals we should be ‘eating from the rainbow’ of different coloured foods.  We also had a great time experimenting, in the classroom, with making delicious smoothies from a choice of fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables.

In Maths, we have focused on hands-on addition, subtraction and place value activities. We have enjoyed challenging ourselves with quick quizzes and using some creative thinking when playing the game ‘Traffic lights’.

Well done, 9/10D on a fantastic start to the year!

9/10E

We have had a fabulous learning journey during Term 1.

Some of the highlights have been learning about healthy food choices, widening our horizon by trying various STEAM activities as well as participating in Fit for Life activities. Needless to say, we help each other make healthy choices while respecting individual interests.

The crew in Secondary 9/10E are kind, helpful and empathetic towards each other. We couldn’t have had such a fantastic term without each of their contributions.

Looking forward to the next term and continuing on with our learning experiences to grow together!

9/10F

Secondary 9/10F has started 2025 working hard towards, and often achieving, a diligent work ethic, a great sense of humour, and a healthy respect for their peers.

A part of respecting others is having patience for them to learn at their own pace, helping and encouraging peers, and listening attentively to staff and peers when they speak. We have an abundance of all these in 9/10F this term. When it comes to a good sense of humour, whether it is one student entering the class introducing themselves as the teacher, or another student cheekily suggesting we have already covered the Discovery lesson content, the class is finding a nice balance between serious and funny.

The class has been understandably excited about activities like ‘Fit for Life’ on Wednesdays, STEAM on Fridays, and going to their chosen Electives on Mondays and Tuesdays. They have been surprisingly excited about mathematics this term where we continue to focus on place value and addition facts and calculations.

Beyond working hard at Numeracy, the class is showing diligence in exploring  the ‘One Body Health’ Discovery unit as well as the literacy connected to it. One area of learning the class has explored has been the value of ‘Eating the rainbow’ when it comes to different foods and choosing foods from nature more often than factory foods.

Another key takeaway from term 1 for 9/10F is their display of resilience and flexibility. Although we consistently strive towards a predictable timetable, things don’t always go to plan and when they don’t, 9/10F has showed the ability to adapt to change.

I am looking forward to seeing the learning continue as we focus on the student’s individual learning goals into the Literacy/Discovery, Numeracy and Social Comp Units.

9/10G

Discovery Literacy

We launched our exciting Discovery Literacy unit, One Body for Life! Students have been exploring how the food we eat and the activities we take part in influence our energy levels and overall well-being. Along the way, we’ve been building our vocabulary with key words from the unit, including body, health, well-being, mind, physical, food, energy, nutrients, nourish, vitamins, carbohydrates, fibre, fat, protein and many more.

Math

We have also been strengthening our skills in place value, vertical addition, vertical subtraction, and shapes. Students have challenged themselves and shown great enthusiasm, dedication, and a strong work ethic.

Sounds-Write

Our whole-class Sounds-Write sessions have been an excellent opportunity to practice saying letter sounds and blending them to read and spell words. Starting from the basics, we have engaged in word-building activities and sound swaps, helping students strengthen their phonics skills in a fun and interactive way!

Highlights from Term 1

Highlights include our exciting excursion to Binnak Park, the fascinating Mad Food Science incursion, our hands-on smoothie-making session, and the high-energy fun of Sports Day. These experiences have created wonderful memories and sparked so much joy and learning along the way!

9/10H

What a great start to the year Secondary 9/10H has had. The students have been settling in, working hard and developing maturity and resilience. We are so proud of how far they have come in such a short time together! As usual, we’ll let the students tell you all about the amazing experiences we’ve had. Can’t wait to see what we achieve in Term 2!

Elise and Lucy

This term, I swam in the District Swimming Carnival at Doncaster Pool. I was feeling nervous but also excited. I was doing freestyle and backstroke. We had a bit of spare time so I made sure to have some food to get ready for the next race. By the end of the day I had gotten first in both races. Now I go to the next round.

Zahlee

Every Friday after recess, all of 9/10 goes to a different class for STEAM. We learn about different activities. In Fashion Design, we have been learning about designing different clothing, bags, shoes and jackets. It’s fun because you get to design stuff and make it your own by being yourself.

London

Last week, we learnt about looking at food packaging. We looked at the ingredients, fats and sugars so we can see if that food is healthy or not. That doesn’t mean we can’t ever eat the food again, we just have to choose and make good food choices. It was fun looking at food packaging.

Demi

All the 9/10s walked to Binnak Park. When we got there we played on the playground, chilled and some people played footy. I got to see my friends there and talk to them. We took lots of photos of students with their friends. Afterwards, the teachers cooked sausages and the students went in line to grab a sausage. Some of the students had sauce on their sausages and some didn’t.

Nathan

In Literacy, we learnt about what good foods and bad foods are like. Fruits and vegetables are good foods, chips are sometimes food.

Emma

This term 9/10 had a day where we made some smoothies. Reena, one of the staff, went out to the shops to buy us some fruit and milk to make our smoothies. I had a go at making a watermelon smoothie, which I didn’t really like, but I had a fun time making it.
