Year 5 Leadership Incursion
By Alden, Liam, Jasmine and Amelie
Introduction
Our aspire higher leadership incursion by UPP helped us gain confidence in becoming a leader of our school next year. It was very inspiring and helped us understand the qualities of being a good leader in the years to come.
What we learnt
We learned about Leadership through plenty of teamwork games and activities. We also learned to work with people we don’t know that well, to practise the key skills of leadership. While we played the games and completed the activities, we practiced encouraging our teammates through highs and lows and being kind and supportive to people that we don’t know very well, persisting through difficulties with our team. We were taught the importance of working together and being a good leader through our fun activities.
What we did
We did a lot of activities across the day that included teamwork and persevering. First, we talked about having the responsibility of being a good and responsible leader, and how whether we had the “shiny badge” or not, we can still be a good leader. Then, we chose an unfamiliar person/friend, called a BFFT, and completed the challenge of pulling each other up to teach us the importance of being kind and supporting others. We also played other games, such as knee tag and foot tag, to demonstrate how important working together is. The next activity was called ‘the epic race’, where we got split into seven different groups, and we had to complete all of the activities as a team. Meanwhile, we were focusing on being a good teammate by encouraging, persisting, taking action, Serving, good influencing, and showing respect with our team, following the ‘ASPIRE’ Acronym. We did a series of fun activities, such as completing a puzzle and stacking cups blindfolded. Then, at the very end of the day, we focused on what type of leader we were: Prophet (the ideas person), Planner (getting the ideas into action), and People (making sure everyone knew what they were supposed to do). We played a game in our class groups, where we had to all go through a hoop in the fastest way possible. Then, we tried to beat our time… instead of competing against each other! It was a very fun and productive day!
Conclusion
Overall we all learnt a lot of things about leadership. It was a productive, fun-filled day to prepare us for the following years. We all took some helpful information home that we learnt through many team games and activities. We year 5s are expected to show the different types of leadership now, and especially when we are in year 6 next year, and for the future!
