From the Boarding Houses

Lockington Boarding House - Year 7 students
Year 7 students have returned to complete their final term of their first year in Melbourne. Students have shown great attitudes and commitment to finishing the year strong. They enjoyed their first weekend by singing karaoke and participating in games during the MITS disco, held at the senior girls' house. Year 7s were some of the first to engage in the activities showing their eagerness for a good time whilst spending time with students from across the whole hill!
Students have started their first season playing for Collingwood Allstars in the local league for Basketball, whilst a few tried their hand at Jiu Jitsu. We have reintroduced Student Chef this term, with students working in small groups and their families to make meals that remind them of home and share this with their peers and staff - a huge success so far.
We have a new sewing machine, which the girls have been learning to use with help from staff member Trish, and fellow student Armani. They are learning how to use the machine and making scrunchies, with some hoping to continue onto patterns to make some clothes.
The fellas have been active in bike rides around Richmond, settling down around the fire pit with Alex from the wellbeing team and enjoyed their time at Bounce.
We have introduced House Captains this term which are student selected where they are in leadership roles for the week within the house - contributing to routines, supporting their peers and advising plans for the weekend activities. This is working well and supporting students to feel proud of themselves and each other - we have had Jordan, Brycen, Armani and MJ so far with Yalarna and Jarlan being picked by their peers for this week.
All students showed courage and pride as they made MITS and their families proud at the annual MITS Gala - with some students speaking and reflecting on their work in front of the large crowd, whilst others worked behind the scenes to welcome guests and show them to their seats. This has shown how the students have built on their confidence during their time in Melbourne - it was fantastic to see.
Last weekend, the Year 7s ventured out to Taungurung country to spend time in Samaria - where Rick and Liz invite students to spend time camping on their bush block. Students went on bush walks, swimming in the dam, made damper and sat around the fire with some epic games of spotlight. A special guest from Elcho Island attended as well to teach the girls to dye pandanus and then make weaving pieces. The girls showed great respect and increased their skills quickly. Big thanks to Patricia for sharing her experience and knowledge with us and the students!
The students are looking forward to their school camp to Canberra, before engaging in their final fun few weeks of boarding. We look forward to seeing everyone down in Melbourne to celebrate the students graduating Year 7 at MITS!

Homework
For the first half of Term 4, Year 8 fellas have been set the task of creating a Business Project inspired by something they are passionate about. From creating a brainstorm web, asking themselves the ‘Why, What, and Who” of their business, to working on business budgets, sourcing equipment and stock, to designing their branding, the boys have really taken to this project. Their creativity and entrepreneurship have been inspiring!
In this selection of photos, you will see their examples of the planning, brainstorming web, draft designs, and budgets. To further enhance their designs, we utilised an AI tool to assist branding and product development.
The important part of learning with AI during homework was that the boys had to be specific with their instructions so that AI could produce exactly what they wanted, and with the support of homework volunteers, they did great! We hope you enjoy the photos!
Volunteer Shoutout!
Volunteers are an integral part of weekly homework sessions, bringing experience, knowledge, skills and above all, unconditional support and dedication. Previous volunteer Sonia Casauria has become a MITS staff member, and Billy Daffern has been volunteering 364 boarding house for two years and has an enduring family connection to MITS. Finally we wish to farewell Millie Walker, a truly amazing volunteer. Millie has been part of the 364-homework family for two years, giving freely of her time and knowledge, facilitating learning, and supporting students one hundred percent! Have fun in South America Millie 😊

A Vibrant Start to Term 4 at 371 Girls Boarding!
Term 4 has begun with energy and excitement at the 371 Girls Boarding House. We kicked off the term with a whole house “Back to School” disco, bringing together all students for an evening of celebration. The event featured a variety of games with fun prizes, delicious pizza, and even some impressive dance moves from staff members. Boarding Coordinator Tayla Hart took the reins as DJ, setting the tone for a joyful and inclusive night. The atmosphere was electric, and students thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting and celebrating the start of the term.
Our Term 4 boarding program has continued with a rich array of activities designed to foster connection, wellbeing, and exploration. Highlights so far include a lively mini golf outing, a visit to Melbourne Fashion Week that sparked creativity and inspiration, and a two-night camp on the Mornington Peninsula. During the camp, students enjoyed fishing, snorkeling, and archery in a beautiful coastal setting.
These experiences have not only been fun but have also strengthened friendships, built confidence, and created lasting memories. As we move through Term 4, we’re proud of the vibrant community spirit and the opportunities our boarding program continues to offer. It’s been a fantastic start to the final chapter of the year.
