From the Classroom

Year 7 Science
Our Year 7 students have been exploring natural disasters in Science and recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Melbourne for a hands-on learning experience. Students met with a real volcanologist, who shared insights into his research and explained how scientists study volcanoes and other geological events.
They then worked in teams to design and build model landscapes, which were put to the test against “mini” natural disaster simulations such as landslides, volcanic eruptions and cyclones. It was an engaging and memorable day filled with curiosity, teamwork and lots of laughter – the students absolutely loved it!
Year 7 Poetry
Our Year 7 students have been developing their creativity and voice through our poetry unit this term. They have explored a range of poetic forms, including haikus, cinquains, limericks, lyrical poetry, blackout poetry and concrete/shape poems. Students have enjoyed experimenting with language, rhythm and imagery to express their thoughts, identities and experiences.
They are now in the process of publishing their very own poetry anthology books, complete with personalised illustrations. These special books will be celebrated and shared with families and MITS staff from across the Hill at the end of the year. It has been inspiring to see students thriving and taking pride in their writing.
SEDA
This term our Year 7 students have been working with SEDA students to complete a special soccer unit. Throughout the program, our students learned new skills, built teamwork and confidence, and enjoyed being coached by older role models. The unit finished with a friendly “SEDA vs MITS” match, where both teams played with great spirit and skill, ending in a tie. The final result came down to a fun scissors, paper, rock challenge – where SEDA unfortunately claimed the win! The program has supported students to stay active, build healthy habits, and grow both socially and physically. It was wonderful to see every student engaged and having fun.
Wellbeing Day
On Friday October 31, the Year 7 and 8 girls enjoyed some time out of the classroom. The 'wellbeing day' included reformer and mat Pilates in the morning with the crew at Pilates247 and some breathwork with Megzy.
The girls absolutely smashed their dance session with the incredible Indigenous Outreach Project and their team. Michael and his crew shared their message of No Shame, Be Proud & Respect. Students watched some deadly dances before giving it a go themselves!
The girls wrapped up the day with a weaving workshop with Charli from Weaving through Culture and enjoyed some yarning and dancing throughout the rest of the afternoon. An awesome day enjoyed by everyone!
Man Cave
For the Year 7 and 8 fellas wellbeing day, they participated in their third Man Cave workshop for the year. It a powerful workshop designed to foster emotional intelligence, resilience, and positive masculinity. Through guided discussions and activities, the program created a safe space for the fellas to reflect on their life experiences, build stronger relationships, and develop strategies for managing challenges.
Transition
Our Year 8 students are steadily preparing for their next big step: beginning at their new schools in 2026! Over the past few weeks, they’ve been busy attending transition days, sitting interviews, meeting their new teachers, and getting fitted for their brand-new uniforms. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they begin to imagine themselves in their new school communities.
Next year, our students will be joining a range of outstanding partner schools, including:
- Firbank Grammar School – Cataleya, Haley, and Vicky
- Methodist Ladies College – Lexi and Rochelle
- Camberwell Girls Grammar – Norah and Bethany
- St Leonard’s College – Josephine and Jaydah
- Scotch College – Harry
- De La Salle College, who we are thrilled to officially welcome as one of our new Pathways Schools for 2026, where Marius, Evan, Nick, Anthony, Curtis, Jermaine, Keelan and Christello will continue their secondary journeys.
Throughout their transition experiences, students have enjoyed engaging in project-based learning, participating in sports days, electives, and co-curricular activities at their new schools. They’ve also been building independence by learning how to travel confidently on public transport with their Myki cards; a big milestone for many of them!
There’s a real buzz of excitement, a few nerves, and an immense sense of pride among our students as they choose their subjects for next year, familiarise themselves with their new school environments, and begin forming friendships that will support them well into the future. Watching them step into this next chapter with curiosity and courage has been incredibly rewarding for our team, and we couldn’t be prouder of all they’ve achieved so far.
