English

Over the past few weeks our students have been deepening their understanding of how language can be used creatively and purposefully. A major focus has been on exploring poetic devices and free verse poetry, where students have analysed how poets use imagery, metaphor, personification and symbolism to create strong emotional responses. They have also experimented with writing their own free verse poems, learning that powerful poetry does not always rely on traditional rhyme.

Students have also investigated structure and sound in poetry, with a focus on rhyme, rhythm and repetition. Through reading and listening students explored how these techniques influence mood, meaning and audience engagement. They learned how repetition can reinforce key ideas, how rhythm supports fluency and flow, and how rhyme can enhance enjoyment and emphasis. These skills directly support students’ ability to analyse author choices and create engaging texts of their own.

In spelling and word work, students have been developing their understanding of suffixes, learning how they change the meaning and grammatical role of base words. This has supported both their reading comprehension and their ability to expand vocabulary in writing. Alongside this, students have been refining their use of punctuation for effect, including semicolons, colons, parentheses, ellipses and dashes. They have practised using these tools to control pace, add emphasis, clarify meaning and create engaging tone in their writing.

Mathematics

Recently our students have been developing strong real world problem solving skills through a focus on Financial Mathematics. Students explored how to make responsible budget decisions based on income and expenditure, learning how to plan, track spending, and make informed financial choices. Through realistic scenarios, they compared needs versus wants, analysed different budget outcomes, and justified their decisions using mathematical reasoning.

Students also built their understanding of percentage discount, applying this knowledge to everyday shopping situations. They learned how to calculate discounts, determine sale prices, and compare value for money. These skills help students see the importance of mathematics in real-life financial decision-making and strengthen their confidence with percentages, mental strategies and written calculations.

Alongside financial learning, students have been working on angles. They developed the ability to estimate, measure and compare angles in degrees using protractors. Students identified acute, obtuse, straight and reflex angles and applied their skills in both practical tasks and problem-solving activities. This has supported their spatial awareness and accuracy in measurement.

Economics and Business

As a part of our Economics and Business inquiry topic our students have been learning about budgeting, attending an excursion to the Queen Victoria Market. The students wrote a recount of the day:

Queen Victoria Market Excursion

On 21st of November, the grade 4 to 6 students went on the bus to Melbourne city to buy groceries for their family from the Queen Victoria Market.

The maximum amount of money they could bring was 10 dollars for the family and 5 dollars for a treat for themselves.

The students were split into four groups with a teacher and helper accompanying each group. There were many students buying a variety of fruits and vegetables, such as:

Mangoes, Pineapples, Cherries, Strawberries,  Passionfruit, Carrots and Garlic.

The main focus of the market was to budget for a family item and spend our money wisely, seeing which shop was cheapest.

After shopping for their family, students had 5 dollars to buy a treat for themselves. Lots of people bought Churros or Donuts or even a Baguette.

Afterwards, the students walked to the Flagstaff Gardens to have their lunch. Then, they had a long and busy walk down to the State Library Victoria, to check out all of the cool rooms and places in the building.

Inside the library there was the real armour of Ned Kelly, the famous bush ranger. Everybody was astonished by the structure of all the rooms in the building.

After visiting the State Library, the students walked to where the bus was going to pick them up and waited patiently for the bus to arrive.

On the way back everyone was exhausted from walking and from shopping.

It was a fun and great day for everyone, we learnt a lot about budgeting and planning ahead. When we got back to school, it was nearly time to go home, so the students waited with their bags until the home bell went.
