From the Assistant Principal

Dear Families,
YEAR 6 CANBERRA EXCURSION
Last week our Year 6 students, along with Mrs Maguire, Mr Taylor. Mrs White, Miss Norris, Mrs Mahoney and myself travelled to Canberra for an exciting 2 day excursion.
The Australian Government understands how vital it is for students to see our national capital to support their Civics and Citizenship learning. To help our families manage the trip expenses, the government provides our school with a payment of $30.00 for each child through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate. This funding is given straight to the school once the journey is finished.
Here is what some of our students wrote about this experience:
Canberra Recount
Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. This is in line with our unit of work Australia as a Nation. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
On Thursday 18 June at 6:30am we set off on our long journey to Canberra. After hours of driving, we finally arrived in Canberra and got a view of the city from Mount Ainslie. The view showed us that Canberra is set out neat and symmetrical and full of trees. Did you know, Canberra’s design was decided through a competition with architects from all over the world submitting their designs.
Next we went to the AEC and learnt about elections and we even cast a vote and elected a Prime Minister and participated in lots of hands-on activities.
We arrived at the New Parliament House, where we explored the advanced architecture and got a tour of the Senate and The House of Representatives. We even acted out what a real election would look like. When we completed our tour we headed back to the motel for dinner. At night we visited Questacon - The National Science & Technology Centre. We experienced many different galleries and exhibits and even got to feel zero gravity on the free fall slide.
After our fantastic journey on day one, we headed back to the motel for overnight accommodation.
On day 2, Friday 19 June, we went to the National Capital Exhibition and learnt about how Marion and Walter designed Canberra’s beautiful layout. After, our lovely bus drivers, took us on a tour through the cultural embassies and The Lodge. Later, we went to the War Memorial and reflected on the lives that were lost serving this country. Then we returned to the bus to drive home, halfway we stopped at McDonalds and had dinner then arrived home.
This was a great experience for all of us.
Year 6 Quinn, Tess and Evie.
