Italian

Our Foundation students learned Italian vocabulary related to families and family members before focusing on animals in Italian. They explored the fascinating differences between the animals found in Italy and those native to Australia. Students also discovered and learned the song "Il Coccodrillo Come Fa", immersing themselves in Italian culture through one of Italy's most famous children's songs.

Our Grade 1 and 2 students revised useful questions and answers for getting to know one another in Italian and learned new expressions such as "What sport do you like?" and "What food do you like?" For the first time this year, students took part in a role-play activity, imagining that they were meeting a new student from Italy who was still learning English. They worked together to make the new student feel welcome by communicating in Italian.

Grade 3 and 4 students learned a range of vocabulary related to the home, including rooms and furniture. They then practised this vocabulary by playing a special version of Cluedo featuring the famous Italian characters Pesce Palla, Coniglio, and their friends. Students became detectives, trying to discover which character had damaged a wall in Pesce Palla's house during a party. Through this engaging game, students were able to revise vocabulary related to rooms in the house as well as school supplies.

Students in Grades 5 and 6 had the opportunity to play a variety of board games inspired by Italian traditions, such as Il Gioco dell'Oca (The Game of the Goose), as well as more modern games like Would You Dare To...? These games were adapted to help students practise conjugating Italian verbs in the present tense. Through working with both regular and irregular verbs, students became familiar with some of the most commonly used Italian verbs and learned the rules that will enable them to conjugate almost any Italian verb.
