News from the Library

Winter is finally starting to take hold, with cool misty mornings and tree leaves turning. In short, it is time to snuggle down with a book, blanket and a warm drink. To celebrate the season, we have created a Cosy Corner in the Library, with book recommendations and soft toy reading buddies to borrow.
Men’s Health Week
Next week is Men’s Health Week. It is celebrated around the world in June every year and is an opportunity to promote and support the health and wellbeing of men. It is a time for all men and their supporters to consider the whole spectrum of wellbeing: physical, mental, and emotional. The theme this year is See a GP, which aims to heighten awareness of preventable health problems, support healthy lifestyle choices and activities, and encourage early detection and treatment (for example, taking care in the sun and having regular skin checks).
The Library currently has a display of books on this theme. Come in and check out books on healthy eating and exercise, strategies for good mental health, and biographies of male role models.
May Artisan of the Month
Congratulations to Holly Howard for winning the May Artisan of the Month. Holly is a regular contributor to AotM and the win is well deserved.
Congratulations also go to Liam Orlandi for their Highly Commended entry.
The June/July AotM is now taking entries – if you have created something you are proud of, send an email with a photo to library@wantirnacollege.vic.edu.au and include the statement I declare this is all my own work. Please include in the Subject line Artisan of the Month.
Nine Letter Word
Every day, a new nine letter word appears in the Library. Words must be at least four letters long and include the middle letter. One goal is to figure out the word that uses all 9 letters. Occasionally Library staff are caught out by our very smart students who find more than one nine letter word. How many words can you make from the pictured puzzle, and can you solve the nine letter word?
Reading Recommendations
Cosy reads can come from many genres. The common elements are low stakes situations and off-page conflict, character driven plots and an optimistic ending. For cosy mysteries think Agatha Christie novels, while Howl’s Moving Castle is an excellent cosy fantasy. Some more recommendations include:
Legends & Lattes, by Travis Baldree (Fantasy BAL)
High fantasy, low stakes - with a double-shot of coffee. After decades of raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian is finally hanging up her sword for good. Now she sets her sights on a new dream - one that involves pulling more shots than punches. Armed with hope and a hard-earned secret, she plans to open the first coffee shop in Thune.
Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, by Helen Simonson (Romance SIM)
Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired) leads a quiet life in the village of St. Mary, England, until his brother's death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But will their relationship survive in a society that considers Ali a foreigner?
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, by Becky Chambers (Science Fiction CHA)
When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn't expecting much. The Wayfarer, a patched-up ship that's seen better days, offers her everything she could possibly want: a small, quiet spot to call home for a while, adventure in far-off corners of the galaxy, and distance from her troubled past. But Rosemary gets more than she bargained for with the Wayfarer.
The crew is a mishmash of species and personalities, from Sissix, the friendly reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the constantly sparring engineers who keep the ship running. Life on board is chaotic, but more or less peaceful, exactly what Rosemary wants. Until the crew are offered the job of a lifetime: the chance to build a hyperspace tunnel to a distant planet.
