Literacy:
This fortnight, our Prep students completed another set of letters, successfully learning to recognise and read the sounds and letters b, h, and l. They practised spelling words such as bud, hob, lag, but, big, hat, lop, and Ben, while also developing their handwriting skills by correctly forming the upper- and lower-case letters l, d, h, g, k, and b. In addition, students learned and practised reading and writing the high-frequency words says and said, building their confidence and fluency in both reading and writing.
Our Grade 1/2 students continued their learning of long vowel sounds by exploring different representations of the long ‘o’ sound. They learned to recognise and read the letter combinations ‘ow’ and ‘oa’ in a variety of words and practised reading and spelling words including crow, snow, throw, blow, mow, goat, coach, goal, gloating, and loaded. Students also investigated the suffix ‘-er’, learning how it changes the meaning of words and practising reading, spelling, and explaining words that contain this suffix.
As part of our reading and writing program, students explored the concept of different perspectives through shared reading and class discussions. They compared the lives and experiences of children in the story What Do You Call Your Grandma? with their own, identifying both similarities and differences. Students demonstrated their understanding by writing about a similarity they shared with the children in the story, as well as a difference, helping them develop empathy, reflection skills, and an appreciation of diverse experiences.
Maths:
This fortnight, students completed their Multiplicative Thinking unit. Our Grade 1/2 students extended their mathematical thinking by learning about odd and even numbers, exploring what these numbers are and how to identify them. They used hands-on materials and grouping strategies to determine whether numbers were odd or even and to explain their reasoning.
Our Prep students investigated equal groupings by finding the total number of wheels on different vehicles and sharing collections into equal groups. Through these activities, students developed their understanding of number patterns, multiplication concepts, and early division skills.
Art:
We are exploring the techniques of acrylic paint, specifically techniques such as scgraffito, dots, wet on wet and splatter. Students have studied Eric Carle's work of The Tiny Seed and have created a beautiful art display of flowers using the scgraffito technique. Our art room is looking amazing!
