Disability Recognition Week & World Day for Assistive Technology

Disability Recognition Week & World Day for Assistive Technology
As part of Disability Recognition Week, Cecil Hills High School was proud to welcome Andrew and his guide dog, Tatum, for a special presentation focused on disability awareness, accessibility and independence.
Students had the opportunity to learn about the important role guide dogs play in supporting people who are blind or have low vision. Andrew shared insights into his daily experiences, the training involved in preparing guide dogs, and the partnership between a person and their guide dog. Tatum demonstrated the calm and professional role that guide dogs play in helping people access the world with greater independence.
The presentation provided students with a valuable opportunity to build understanding, empathy and respect for people living with disability.
We also recognised World Day for Assistive Technology by celebrating the incredible tools that support people to participate, communicate, learn and thrive. At Cecil Hills High School, our students use a range of assistive technologies, including wheelchairs, AAC devices, hearing aids, noise-cancelling headphones and other personalised supports.
These technologies are much more than equipment — they provide students with greater independence, remove barriers and create opportunities for every student to have their voice heard and participate fully.
Thank you to Guide Dogs NSW/ACT for sharing this meaningful experience with our students and helping us continue to build a more inclusive and understanding school community.
