Prep Community News

Dear Prep Families,

As we reach the end of Week 8, the Prep Team is thrilled to see the continued growth the prep students are making both within their learning in the classroom and outside in the yard.

English

Our InitiaLit program has continued to introduce new sounds and letters. We have recently introduced letters and and will learn the letter ‘l’ this week! You can help to support your child at home by asking them to share the sound that n, g and l make. You can ask them what sound does ‘nut’, ‘gate, and ‘lemon’ start with. Here are the new letter friends we have met this week:

We continue to incorporate daily reading and writing activities into our lessons each day. We continue to practice reading CVC words and building CVC words using the sounds they have learnt. Please see a list of examples below:

We have continued to learn more tricky words! These are words that cannot be sounded out using the sounds we have learnt. Below are the tricky words we have recently introduced and which we are learning this week. You can help support your child’s learning by asking them what each word is and if they can say a sentence using that word.

Last week in our vocabulary lessons we read the story “Edward the Emu”. The 3 words that we focused on from the story were “amusing”, “detest” and “impressive”. Ask your child what these words mean, or if they can act out these words for you!

This week in our vocabulary lessons we have been reading the story “There’s a bear on my chair”. The 3 words we have been focusing on from the story are “nasty”, “rare” and “despair”.

Maths

In Maths, we continued to practice adding two collections together. You can practice this at home by showing one group of items and ask, “How many?” then add a second group and ask, “how many more?”. Then count both groups to find out how many there are altogether.

We also have been learning about length. We learnt how to compare the lengths of objects and how to measure correctly by having both objects aligned. You can practice this at home by comparing the length of two objects and asking, “Which is longer” or “Which is shorter?”.

In maths, alongside length, we have been learning about capacity. We learnt how to describe the capacity of a container using the language full, empty, or half full.

You can practice this at home, by using different jugs, or water bottles, and asking, “Which is full?” and “Which is empty?”.

Other Areas

Some other areas of learning that we have been completing each week include Digital Technology and Respectful Relationships. During Digital Technology, our students have been learning about the importance of cyber safety.

This week we discussed how to make safe habits that can keep us safe both online and offline. Ask your child about some safe habits that they can use when online.

In Respectful Relationships this week, our students have been learning about how to be fair and kind. We discussed the characteristics of someone who is both kind and fair and what this looks like within the classroom and outside on the playground.

We have continued our history lessons and learning about our family history/cultural backgrounds. This week, we discussed birthday celebrations. Students enjoyed sharing how they celebrate their birthdays and how others celebrate. Students drew pictures of their birthday celebrations and labelled their drawing.

Reminders:

Take Home Reading:

At Tarneit Rise, we encourage reading each night to practise and develop enjoyment in reading. Each child has an assigned day to change their reading books. Please bring their reading satchel on this day so classroom teachers can check reading journals and assist your child in getting new books. In the reading journal you can record how many nights of reading your child has done. While you are reading, ask your child questions about what they have just read to support comprehension. At the end of each term, certificates will be given to celebrate hitting certain milestones for nights of reading!

Clothing:

With the colder weather starting this Winter, please ensure that you label all extra clothing that your child brings to school with their name and their class (e.g. PA). This helps us with lost items and ensuring that your child’s items are returned to them. We quite often end up with parents having to repurchase uniforms as the children lose them throughout the day and they cannot be found. If it has a name and class on it, it will easily be returned to the teacher within a few days.

Prep Open Day:

In week 9, on Tuesday the 17th of June at 2:20pm, Prep families are invited to visit their child’s classroom to participate in a history lesson, where together you and your child will make a family tree! We are super excited and cannot wait to see you all!

If you have any further questions, please contact your child’s class teacher for support. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about your child’s learning this week!
