Bonjour Parents and Students!
We would like to say a big congratulations to the following students who participated in the Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition organized by Alliance française de Melbourne:
This year, over 90 schools took part in the competition, with more than 5,500 entries across Victoria!
A special congratulations to Nalan, Daniel and Advaita, who achieved a perfect score of 20/20 and will be proudly representing our school in the finals this Sunday.
All the other students also achieved excellent results, with scores ranging from 19 to 19.5 out of 20. We are incredibly proud of their efforts, courage, and commitment in this prestigious French poetry event. Bravo à tous!
Here is a quick update on we have been learning in French in week 7 and 8.
- Prep students learned the names of family members and all 26 letters of the French alphabet. They also drew pictures of their family and labelled each member in French. We practiced saying and listening to the French alphabet together.
Grade 1 Students learned vocabulary related to emotions (happy, sad, tired…) and polite words such as thank you and please. They are starting to use these words naturally in the classroom!
- Grade 2 Students wrote simple sentences about the activities they enjoy doing with their family members. They also learned that Australia is a multilingual country and explored different languages spoken here, as well as different ways to say hello in these languages.
- Grade 3 Students practiced everyday questions such as What’s your name?, How old are you?, and what is your favourite food? They also learned greetings and well-wishes to further build their speaking confidence.
Grade 4 Students explored Australia as a multilingual country through research. They were also introduced to the concept of Francophone countries and gained a basic understanding of where French is spoken around the world.
- Grades 5/6 Students learned 10 different vowel sound combinations (e.g., ou, oi, eau…) to improve their reading and spelling. They were introduced to two important irregular verbs: avoir (to have) and être (to be), and learned that some French verbs don’t follow regular patterns.
Thank you for continuing to support your child’s French learning journey! It’s a joy to see them grow in confidence and language skills each week.
