Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,

Welcome back to our learning journey. Can you believe that we are already at the end of week 8 of term 2. Where has the time gone?

Knowledge Building

We are now four weeks into our knowledge building unit on Inside Out and Back Again.  Students have been working hard planning and writing a historical narrative.  In the coming weeks students will continue writing the resolution and conclusion to their historical narratives. They have been learning how to use direct and indirect speech. They also studied the correct use of apostrophes for singular and plural possession and contractions. Fronted prepositional phrase, fronted adjective and fronted -ing verb were also visited. See below examples on how these language devices are used. Our next step will be to include these in our writing.

Writing checklists and planners are also used to guide students through the writing process every step of the way.

Mathematics

In this eight-lesson topic, students learn more about the relationships between possible outcomes of chance experiments, theoretical probabilities and relative frequencies. This builds on prior learning about probability ranges and dependent and independent chance outcomes. Throughout the unit, there is a focus on identifying all possible outcomes, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of outcomes of chance experiments, as well as providing a framework for checking the accuracy of results.

Vocabulary

Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 6 new words each week from the text Inside Out and Back Again. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are then using these words in their writing and reading.

Reminders

  • Student journals will not be sent home this year. Students will write their reading in the journals when they arrive at school each day.
