From the Classroom

News from The Seniors

In English, the Seniors are continuing to explore Boy Overboard, deepening their understanding of life in refugee camps and how social roles influence the way characters speak and behave. We’ve also been reading a picture book 'Fox', using it as a foundation to develop our descriptive writing skills. Students have been focusing on figurative language, particularly metaphors and similes, to create vivid imagery and emotion in their writing.

In Maths, we have been we’ve been focusing on decimals, practicing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with decimal numbers. Students have been applying these skills to solve real-world problems. We have also been focusing on the order of operations using the PEMDAS framework (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction).

In Inquiry, we have continued to learn about adaptations of plants and animals and how they adapt to survive in their environment. In Science, we have explored the Earth's tectonic plates and how natural disasters occur such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Middle School News

In Literacy, Middle A continues to work on persuasive texts. Students are creating texts with arguments, persuasive and emotional language and using technical language appropriate for the subject of the text.

Middle B have written paragraphs about their 'Bunyip' and used the computer to publish them for display.

In Maths, Middle A are still reviewing Multiplication and Division strategies. Students are using arrays, number lines, skip counting and multiplication facts to assist them with their learning.

Middle B are learning addition and subtraction strategies and doing some measurement activities.

In Science, we continue to study Earth's processes and features. Students have been finding out information on erosion, fossils and how weather affects the land.

This week Middle B created mini plateau's and then did an experiment to show how rain can cause erosion.

In Inquiry, students are reading about our international neighbours and the local fauna and flora in those countries. Students also had the opportunity to read about the lives of other children from these countries.

Juniors Tell All

The Juniors have been buzzing about our wonderful learning this fortnight!

In Literacy, we were all invited to a very special wedding! The letters Q and U got married! Students engaged in an exciting lesson about the importance of putting the letter 'u' after 'q'. It was wonderful to see all students so eager to learn about this spelling pattern. In English, we have been learning about information texts and are getting ready to create our informative booklets all about our own sea creature.

In Maths, students have been learning the connection between addition and subtraction. Students have engaged in lots of different problem solving games and activities to learn addition and subtraction. Junior B has also begun to look at length, they were given different measuring tools, measuring lots of different things around the classroom to learn terms such as 'shorter than' and 'longer than'.

Our inquiry projects have started! Students have been creating their very own sea creatures. They have focussed on different ocean and sea habitats and the animals that live there. Students are going to be creating their invented sea animal and its habitat ready for an inquiry expo at the end of term! Get ready to come and check out our amazing work on Monday 30th June at 3pm, see our Compass post for more information.
