STEM
Week 3
Preps explored a variety of objects and then had to sort these into what it was made from.
1/2s used three of their senses – touch, sight, smell – to explore fabric, sandpaper, coloured paper, a metal spoon and pepper, to then write a sentence to describe these with their senses.
3/4s learnt about properties of solids. Using a plastic cup, paper cup, wooden block, a metal spoon, a wooden spoon, a plastic spoon, a sponge and a piece of paper, they had to test these items in four different ways: hard or soft? Can it bend? Heavy or light? Rough or smooth?
5/6s firstly explored three mystery bags. They had to determine which was a solid, which was a liquid, and which was a gas, and then try to predict what was in each bag. Students then discussed properties of solids, liquids and gases.
Week 4
Preps went for a walk around the school yard. Whilst out on their walk, several objects
were pointed out and students had to identify what material it was made from.
1/2s explored a variety of materials in small groups and had to sort these into similar properties.
3/4s learnt about the properties of liquids. They then explored the liquids of water, chocolate topping and golden syrup to look at the differences with how each liquid poured.
5/6s looked at how the processes of heating and cooling can change states. They then got to choose whether to depict their knowledge and understanding by either completing a comic strip or a stop motion animation to show water changing from solid (ice) to liquid (water) to gas (steam).
