National Reconciliation Week 2025
National Reconciliation Week is held every year from 27 May to 3 June. These dates mark two important moments in Australia’s history: the 1967 referendum, which recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census, and the 1992 Mabo decision, which recognised Native Title and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to the land.
This week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation. It encourages us to build respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider Australian community.
The theme for 2025 is Bridging Now to Next. It reminds us that the past, present, and future are all connected. It encourages us to learn from the past and take steps together toward a better, fairer future. While Australia’s reconciliation journey hasn’t always been easy, and there have been both steps forward and setbacks, we can continue to grow and move forward together.
Banyule City Council is offering an opportunity to participate in a National Sorry Day Healing Ceremony. This a meaningful event that encourages reflection on truth telling, healing, and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We encourage you to speak with your students about inclusive behaviours and the role we all play in building an inclusive and friendly learning environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued.
