Learning and Teaching

LS3 Juniors

Students in Clinic 1 Mathematics have been working hard on their personalised learning goals. Their focus has been on understanding numbers and how they work. Some students are practising counting forwards and backwards, while others are working on number formation and representing numbers using concrete materials. Each goal is tailored to the individual student, helping to build confidence and a strong foundation in numeracy.

Here are some photos showcasing their fantastic efforts!

Checking for Understanding in Mathematics ✏️➕

At the start of Term 2, our LS3 seniors have been diving into a powerful new strategy in Mathematics called Checking for Understanding. This approach helps us as teachers regularly gauge what our learners really know and understand about the content we’re exploring together.

One of the exciting tools we’ve introduced is the Exit Ticket 🎟️. At the end of a lesson, students are given a quick question—either displayed on the board or handed out on a slip of paper—that reviews the day’s learning. It’s a simple but effective way to check whether key concepts have clicked ✅.

These exit tickets have already become a fantastic part of our maths clinic routine! Not only do they help us spot and address any misconceptions straight away 🤔, but they also encourage students to share their thinking with each other 🗣️. It’s been great to see our learners explaining their reasoning, asking questions, and learning collaboratively. We’re proud of how confidently our seniors are engaging in this process—turning quick checks into meaningful learning moments!

PARENT HELPERS IN THE LEARNING SPACE – JUNIORS

This term parent helpers in the learning space will commence in Week 4. If you are a Junior parent/carer and would like to offer your time as a parent helper in the morning - anytime between 9:00- 10:45 am - we would love to have you come and join us.

As a parent helper you can offer a half an hour of your time, an hour or stay for the whole morning – it is totally up to you. Unfortunately, younger siblings can not join you if you volunteer your time to help in the learning space.

Parents support in the Juniors by listening to children read, helping run an activity or listening to them share their written stories.

If this is something you would be interested in doing please email Joanna -jforbes@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au with your name, child’s name, learning space and availability (day and time) by Friday 2nd May.

All parents/carers volunteering to help must have a current working with children’s check.

Thank you

Joanna (Learning and Teaching Leader)

SENIOR SPORT

Interschool Sport

On Friday our Grade 5/6’s played against Rivergum Primary School.  The weather was fantastic and most enjoyable playing Interschool Sport. Our Grade 4’s are enjoying the morning and being able to experience the competition mode.   The AFL team had an opportunity playing at Banjo Paterson Oval, which they enjoyed thoroughly.

Both schools played with great sportsmanship.   The students are practising their skills and tactics and preparing for the Lighting Premiership which will be held on Tuesday 17th of June. We are very proud of our students, and I commend our students in their competitiveness and showing respect to the each other and the students from Rivergum Primary School.

GOLF CLINICS

This week Juniors had their first golf clinic. Definitely a sport many of the Juniors have not experienced before. Students were engaged in new activities and skills. They had a great time learning how to hold a golf club and how to swing it. They then spent time trying to hit the golf ball accurately.

Golf clinics will continue on Mondays. The next one is next week.

                Week 5: Monday May 19th

                Week 7: Monday June 2nd

                Week 9: Monday June 16th

This term all Juniors will have their clinic on the same day. Parents please ensure your child is wearing their sports uniform on the above dates. Further information has been provided via Operoo which we ask parents to acknowledge.

TAG RUGBY CLINICS

Thanks to Ali, NRL Game Development Officer, all students at SFS have experienced a free tag rugby clinic. This will give students a taste of what the after-school League Stars Program being run at SFS later this term, will be like.

Seniors had their clinics on Monday and learnt lots of new skills as well as having fun!!! We would like to thank our two NRL coaches who attended on the day to provide our students with this experience. Jake will also be running the after-school League Stars Program so students will be familiar with him.
