Education in Faith

5th Sunday of Easter - Year C
“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” (John 13:34)
In this brief yet profound Gospel passage this week, Jesus speaks to His disciples during the Last Supper. Knowing that His hour has come, He leaves them with what He calls a "new commandment" - to love one another as He has loved them. This command goes beyond a general sense of kindness or compassion. It is a call to sacrificial, unconditional love, mirroring the love Jesus showed by washing their feet and preparing to give His life.
The "newness" of this command lies in its measure: Jesus’ own love. It is love without limits, love that forgives, that serves, and that places others before self. It is a love that reflects God's own heart.
This Gospel invites each of us to reflect deeply on how we live out that love - in our families, workplaces, parishes, and communities. Are we loving as Jesus loves? Or just loving when it’s convenient, easy, or safe?
Jesus concludes by saying, “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” This love is not just a private virtue but a public witness. The world will recognize Christians not by their knowledge, success, or moral correctness, but by the radical way they love.
💬 Discussion Starters
- What does it mean to you personally to "love as Jesus loved"?
- How is this different from the way the world often defines love?
- Can you recall a time when someone showed you Christ-like love?
- How did it affect you?
- Jesus gave this commandment during a time of betrayal and coming suffering.
- What does that teach us about loving others even when it's difficult?
- What are some concrete ways you can show this kind of love in your life this week?
- At home? In your parish? In your school or workplace?
- “By this all will know that you are my disciples...”
- What kind of witness does your life give to others about being a follower of Christ?
