Van Gogh Starry Night

This term all of the students have been investigating the Art element of texture which refers to how to how an object feels when you touch the surface (actual) or the illusion of texture created through visual techniques eg. brushstrokes, patterns or shading (implied). Each year level has had completed different projects to demonstrate their understanding of texture, some have used real texture in their art, and others have drawn texture.

 

The Year 5 and 6 students were learning about Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh who was known for his distinctive textured surfaces in his paintings, primarily achieved through the impasto technique and short vibrant brushstrokes.

 

After sketching out a simple landscape including a sun or a moon, the students used supermix pastels to blend colours and create the first layer of their artwork. They then used a technique called ‘sgraffito’ which means ‘to scratch’ at the surface and reveal the colour underneath. The students also added short marks using oil pastels to give the appearance of texture in the style of Van Gogh:
