Senior School Report

Dear ECSC Community,
Our Senior School leaders and students have hit the ground running in Term 3, with a wide range of engaging activities, excursions, events, and guest speakers.
Some recent highlights include our Year 11 cohort attending the Melbourne Careers Expo, the Year 10 into Year 11 Information Night and Subject Expo (with over 350 attendees), and an inspiring session with Darren Pereira, an international motivational speaker, who addressed our Year 12 students as they prepare for their VCAA examinations. These opportunities add enormous value to our students’ learning experiences, and I would like to thank our dedicated team of teachers and leaders for their passion and commitment.
As the Year 12 VCAA examinations approach in October and November, we have put a wide range of supports and programs in place to ensure our students are well prepared for this final challenge.
Year 10 (2026) Subject Selections and Course Counselling
In the final weeks of Term 2 and the beginning of Term 3, our Year 10 students engaged in the important process of course counselling and subject selection.
- Students and their parents/carers participated in appointments to discuss future pathways and make informed decisions about senior school.
- Each Year 10 student attended a 15-minute course counselling session with our expert Careers Team, who also provided guidance on VET enrolments and Unique Student Identifiers (USIs).
- Students arrived well-prepared, having read the handbooks, attended the Careers Expo, and participated in the Senior Pathways Information Evening.
It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and careful consideration our students brought to this process.
The Importance of Good Attendance
As parents and carers, we all want the very best for our children. Regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in setting them up for success.
Did you know?
- A student absent one day per week will miss the equivalent of two full years of schooling by the end of Year 12.
- 90% of young people with attendance below 85% do not achieve five or more VCE passes, and around one third do not receive an ATAR.
- Poor attendance impacts academic results, work completion, and teacher authentication of assessments.
- Attendance is also a key indicator for employers and tertiary institutions when considering reliability and commitment.
When a student misses… | That equals… | Which is… | From Year 7–12 that is… | The best outcome they can achieve is… |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 day a fortnight | 20 days/year | 4 weeks | Over ½ a year of learning | Equal to starting but not completing Year 12 |
1 day a week | 40 days/year | 8 weeks | Almost 1 year | Equal to finishing Year 11 |
2 days a week | 80 days/year | 16 weeks | Almost 2 years | Equal to finishing Year 10 |
3 days a week | 120 days/year | 24 weeks | Almost 3 years | Equal to finishing Year 9 |
Every day counts. Even small absences create gaps in learning, reduce motivation, affect confidence, and impact social connections and friendships.
Supporting Your Child’s Attendance
Strong attendance habits begin at home. Parents and carers set the tone by valuing punctuality and school participation. You can help by:
- Creating consistent morning routines to ensure punctual arrival.
- Talking with your child about their learning.
- Reading school communications (Progress Reports, Compass posts).
- Attending Student-Led Conferences.
- Supporting homework routines in a calm, organised environment.
- Avoiding unnecessary absences during school hours (e.g., GP or dental appointments).
If your child is reluctant to attend school, please reach out early, we are here to help.
Important Reminder: Students in Years 11 and 12 with attendance below 80% may not be considered on track to complete their VCE studies.
Looking Ahead
We will also be refreshing our focus on equipment and uniform, please keep an eye on Compass for further information.
In Conclusion
At ECSC, we are committed to providing a high-quality education in a supportive and inclusive environment. The collaboration between staff, students, and families is central to our success, and we thank you for your continued support.
We look forward to a productive and rewarding Term 3.
Yours Sincerely
Glen Cowan

- Home Environment: Provide a quiet, organised study space at home to help your child focus and be productive.
Exam timetable
The VCE exam timetable is now available on the VCAA website and has also been shared with students via Compass and the VCAA exam navigator handout given to each Year 12 student. It’s important that you check the timetable carefully so you know the exact dates, times, and locations of your exams. Year 11 Update
A Strong Start to Semester 2
Our Year 11 students have made an excellent start to the new semester. After completing their exams with much success at the end of last term, students have now transitioned smoothly into Unit 2 studies. Their hard work and positive approach are setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the year.
In Week 1 of Term 3, the entire cohort attended the Careers Expo, an exciting opportunity that provided valuable insights into a wide range of study, training, and career pathways. Students came away inspired and better informed about the possibilities that lie ahead beyond high school.
Following the expo, students were treated to a series of fun-filled activities as a well-earned break. They split into groups to enjoy bowling, mini golf, movies, the aquarium, karaoke, and laser tag. These activities gave students a chance to relax, celebrate their efforts, and spend time with friends after a busy exam period.
This balance of academic focus and social connection has set the tone for a productive and rewarding term. We look forward to seeing our Year 11s continue to grow in confidence, resilience, and ambition as they progress through Unit 2.
Year 10 Update
Semester 1 Exams
The Year 10 exams, held on 26th and 27th June, were a great success, with students demonstrating exceptional dedication and focus throughout. From English and Humanities to Mathematics and Science, students worked hard to showcase their knowledge and skills. The exam schedule was tight, but everyone remained on track and followed the required protocols.
The exam preparation assembly on 25th June helped students understand expectations and gave them the tools to approach their assessments with confidence. It was clear that the students had put in considerable effort, and their commitment was reflected in their performance. These exams play a crucial role in determining future subject pathways, including VCE and VCE-VM eligibility, and students were fully engaged, taking the process seriously.
Overall, the exams were an important milestone in their learning journey, and it’s evident that the Year 10s are on the right track for their academic futures.
Work Experience Week
Edgars Creek Secondary College launched its first-ever mid-year Work Experience program, and it was a massive success! Over 130 Year 10 students took part, securing placements across a variety of industries, from mechanics and educators to law firms, retail stores, and more.
The students gained valuable hands-on experience and developed important workplace skills. Employers were impressed with the students' professionalism, enthusiasm, and work ethic, providing extremely positive feedback about their performance. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore potential career paths and build real-world connections. Overall, the program was a huge hit and a great stepping stone for our students' future careers!
Information and VCE Expo Night
The VCE Expo and Information Night held on Wednesday, 23rd July, were a resounding success, with over 350 attendees joining the sessions. The event provided valuable insights into course selections for 2026, with families engaging in discussions about VCE options, subject choices, and future pathways.
The College offered 3 Information Night sessions, alongside the Subject Expo, to help students and families make informed decisions. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, as attendees explored the opportunities available and gathered essential details about VCE. It was a fantastic turnout, with the buzz and enthusiasm around next year’s options clearly evident throughout the evening.
The college launched the 2026 VCE subject handbook!
Course Counselling
Year 10 students attended a vital conference with a parent or guardian to complete their 2026 Course & Subject applications. This meeting provided the opportunity to confirm course selections for VCE, Vocational Major, VET subjects, and other pathways, ensuring students were on track for their future academic journey.
During the conference, students reviewed their academic strengths, teacher recommendations, and exam results. They also discussed their career goals and the subjects that best aligned with their aspirations. As places were limited, those who attended had the chance to secure their preferred subjects for next year.
ABCN Programs
My Career Rules - Online Program at school
Year 10 students had the chance to take part in My Career Rules, a program that connects them with professionals from various industries. This hands-on experience helped open their eyes to in-demand careers and future job opportunities. Students engaged in café-style discussions with mentors, who shared their career journeys and insights. It was a great opportunity for students to ask questions and reflect on their own aspirations. With 40% of young people unaware of skill shortages or growth areas, this program provided a vital context for informed career decisions.
Find Your Purpose - Melbourne CBD
Year 10 students took part in the Find Your Purpose program, gaining valuable insights into their strengths, values, and career goals. Facilitators from community organisations, alongside our staff, led the sessions, providing valuable insights and encouraging thoughtful discussions. Overall, the program was a huge success, empowering students to foster respect and responsibility in their relationships moving forward.
VM Update
Year 11 VM
Last term, our Year 11 PDS students planned and led a series of Wellness Activities for the Grade 3 students at Edgars Creek Primary School and let’s just say it was such a success, we’ve been invited to run it again!
From ukulele lessons to drawing and colouring, Play-Doh creations and sports skills sessions, the activities were fun, engaging, and thoughtfully tailored to support the younger students’ wellbeing. Our Year 11 students stepped up as confident, caring role models, demonstrating leadership, creativity, and a genuine connection with the ECPS students.
The project also had strong links to their VM Literacy unit, where students documented and promoted their activities through a website design task. It was a powerful example of hands-on, real world learning, building both communication and community.
Year 12 VM
For Numeracy’s Nutrition on a Budget project, our Year 12 VM students dived deep into understanding what their bodies need nutritionally. They looked at their own eating habits over a whole week and worked out what kinds of nutrients they were getting, or missing. Then they investigated nutritional value versus economical value across various menus.
The big challenge? Planning and cooking a meal that was both healthy and affordable, all for under $10 per person. To our surprise and delight, some tried their hand at classic dishes, others tried totally new recipes, and some cooked old family favourites. Plus, they had to actually go shopping for the ingredients and cook their meals themselves, which showed off some serious kitchen skills, whilst others took on the challenge of cooking for themselves for the first time.
It was great to see how this project made them think about food in a whole new way, not just what tastes good, but what’s good for them and their wallets too. A lot of them said they now pay way more attention to what they eat and how much it costs.
Our Year 12 VM students were also fortunate enough to attend Whittlesea Tech to learn about how to make, package and market chocolate. They learned about native Australian ingredients, how to use the newest technology to melt and combine ingredients, and had the opportunity to design their own product logo. They were very happy to take home their very own self-made chocolate.
Unit 4 Year 12 PDS
This term in Personal Development Skills, our Year 12 students are exploring the issue of food insecurity in their local community. As part of this unit, students are taking meaningful action by running a Breakfast Club, cooking lunch one day for fellow VCE students, organising a can collection drive and preparing meals for a local food collective that supports families doing it tough.
These activities not only make a real difference in the lives of others, but also provide students with valuable life skills as they prepare to finish Year 12. Through planning, cooking, collaborating, and giving back to the community, students are learning the importance of empathy, responsibility, and initiative, skills that will serve them well beyond school in both their personal and professional lives. This hands on learning empowers students to leave a positive legacy and shows them how small actions can create real change.
