Super Strength Spotlight: Gratitude

At our school, we are passionate about helping students grow not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. As part of our Super Strengths program, each classroom explores a new character strength every fortnight. Together, we learn what the strength means, what it looks like in action, and how we can all work to strengthen it. This fortnight, our focus is on the powerful strength of Gratitude.

Gratitude is about recognising and appreciating the good things in our lives—whether it’s a kind friend, a caring teacher, or a beautiful day. It encourages positivity, connection, and kindness, and can help students feel happier and more supported in their school community. In the classroom, students may discuss ways to show gratitude, such as saying “thank you,” noticing the efforts of others, and reflecting on the things that bring joy to their day.

Importantly, knowing and developing our strengths—like gratitude—can also help us with our learning. When students understand what they’re good at and where they can grow, they build confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude towards learning and challenges.

How Parents Can Help at Home:Families play a key role in supporting character development. Here are some simple ways you can help your child strengthen their gratitude at home:

  • Be a role model – Talk about what you’re grateful for and thank others often.
  • Start a gratitude habit – Share one thing you’re thankful for each day, such as at dinner or bedtime.
  • Encourage thank-you notes or gestures – Help your child write or draw messages of thanks to someone who helped or made them smile.
  • Focus on the positives – Talk about the good parts of the day, even when things feel tough.

Together, by focusing on our Super Strengths, we are helping students become capable, kind, and confident learners. Let’s keep celebrating and growing these strengths—one fortnight at a time!

The Monash Health Achievement Program is a Victorian Government initiative that provides a structured framework to help schools create healthier, happier, and more inclusive environments for students, staff, and families. The program is centred around seven key health areas: Healthy Eating and Oral Health, Physical Activity and Movement, Sexual Health and Wellbeing, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sun Protection, Safe Environments, and Smoking, Vaping, Alcohol and Other Drugs.

Our school is actively working towards gaining badges in all of these areas as part of our commitment to whole-school health and wellbeing. We are proud to have already achieved the Sun Protection badge, recognising our efforts in promoting sun safety and protecting students from harmful UV exposure.

Currently, we are focusing on the Mental Health and Wellbeing badge, working to strengthen the social and emotional wellbeing of our school community through inclusive practices, support systems, and awareness initiatives. By participating in the Achievement Program, we are taking meaningful steps to ensure our school is a positive, supportive, and health-promoting place for everyone.
