TEACHING AND LEARNING

We have now completed our assessment period. Our assessments provide us with a valuable insight and opportunity to celebrate all of the amazing growth occurring across the school. We are proud of the way our students embraced the challenge of assessments with a growth mindset. Thank you for the ongoing support throughout this time.
Numeracy:
What a fantastic two weeks we’ve had during our assessment period! Across the school, students demonstrated a strong growth mindset, believing in themselves and embracing the challenge of doing difficult things. It was wonderful to see the focus and determination students brought to their assessment tasks, as well as their ability to work independently and respectfully, allowing their classmates to concentrate too.
Students completed the Maths Online Interview one-on-one with their teachers. This engaging assessment uses a range of hands-on materials to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical understanding. This semester, we introduced a new component to the interview, which included tasks on length, mass, and time. The students especially enjoyed using the balance scales and pouring rice to measure exactly 135 grams!
In addition to this, students also completed digital assessments such as Essential Assessment and PAT. Our teachers have been busy analysing this data to help inform upcoming student reports.
Well done to all our amazing students for their hard work and effort over the past two weeks!
Mathematics reporting 2025:
Please see the attached letter outlining recent changes to the reporting of Mathematics across the state. We hope this provides some clarity regarding your child/children’s upcoming report. The key message is that Numeracy reports from 2024 cannot be directly compared with those from 2025. As stated in the letter, if you have any questions, please speak with your child’s teacher for further information.
High abilities update:
Our Year 5/6 High Ability maths students have recently completed the first of four competitions in the Maths Olympiad. This year is the first year Lucas Primary School has submitted a team for the Maths Olympiad, which has a focus on using their numeracy skills to solve worded problems…and they are tricky! What a great challenge! Not only are students learning how to problem solve but practising fabulous life skills like resilience and growth mindset. The next Olympiad competition will be held on the 13th June!
Check out the example question, as well as the working out that some of our students did to work out the problem! Could you have worked it out?
In another exciting opportunity, this year, our High Ability writers in Years 3-6, as well as our Young Author participants will be creating the 2025 Lucas Yearbook! Yes, it’s back!
The 2024 Lucas Journeys yearbook was a roaring success and this year it will be bigger and better. Thank you to the families who participated in our survey about the yearbook. Students have looked at this feedback and we have decided that there will be more student writing, more photographs and space dedicated to every class in the 2025 version! Written, edited and formatted only by our students, this work is a credit to them and will be available to purchase in Term 4. More details to come!
