Electives
Craft, knitting & crocheting
This month some of the Arts/Crafts elective group have been busy learning how to do Tunisian Crocheting. Unlike regular crochet, Tunisian crochet works similar to knitting where you keep multiple stitches on the hook and then work the rows forwards and backwards. The end result is a lovely thick, springy fabric that is perfect for making warm scarves and beanies. Some students expressed an interest in learning how to use a sewing machine and were given an opportunity to make their own storage bag for their arts/crafts projects. Krys enjoyed exploring the different stitches available and used a zigzag stich to strengthen the side seams of their bag.
Dungeons and Dragons
At Plenty River College, students have embraced Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) as both a recreational and educational activity, learning the game through peer-led sessions and online resources. The collaborative nature of D&D has strengthened their social skills and fostered creativity, while also enhancing critical thinking, literacy, and numeracy. Despite challenges such as the time commitment and complex rules, the students’ enthusiasm has made D&D a valuable tool for learning, social interaction, and creative expression. Many students who began with little knowledge are now more confident to engage in the sessions.
Gym
On Monday afternoons the students at PRC have the option to participate in several afternoon activities. These include band, arts and crafts, Dungeons and Dragons or attending the Mill Park Gym offsite. Following the lunch break, students are transported via the school bus to the Mill Park Leisure Centre. While at the Leisure Centre the students have free reign to use the gym facilities as they see fit. Whether that be cardio on the treadmills, bikes and stair masters, building aesthetic muscle with the free weights and cable machines or getting stronger with some powerlifting movements like the deadlift and squat, it’s all their choice. Going to the gym offers the students the opportunity to get out of their comfort zone by interacting in the community as well as helping them improve their fitness and overall physical health. These attributes can also help improve the overall mental health of those involved, making it a very beneficial activity.
