Year 12 Economics Excursion
During Week 7, I took 5 Year 12 Economics students to an event hosted by Pearson Education to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their publication “Australia in the Global Economy” a textbook that is widely used by Year 12 students.
The event was based around the “Importance of Economics for Australia’s Future” and the guest speaker was the Hon. Dr Jim Chalmers, Australia’s Treasurer.
We had an incredible evening, getting a selfie with Ross Gittins (SMH – Economics Editor) in the lift and a front row seat to listen to not only Jim Chalmers but a panel of expert economists about the issues the Australian economy is facing and how we can solve them and maintain our prosperity.
Year 10 Commerce
This term Year 10 Commerce is studying the topic of Investing. In conjunction with this topic the students are playing the Australia Securities Exchange (ASX) Shareholder Game. Students are given an opportunity to invest $50,000 of into the exchange game, where stock prices mirror the real market. The winner of the game is the student who has returned the most profit over the course of the game.
We would like to acknowledge Jesse (G10). He has embraced this challenge with gusto and as a result of his efforts, has been named top participant of the game this month out of over 16,000 participants.
His portfolio is now worth over $57,000. His success can be attributed to his “buy and hold” strategy. The biggest winner in his portfolio has been a retailer of luxury brands where the share price has increased by over 50%.
