Library News

Welcome to week 9; it’s hard to believe the end of the term is not so far away!

This Week’s Reads

We recently received our September Book Order from the Catholic School’s Office, filled with fantastic new stories for all students, so I thought I would read some this week.

In Kindergarten, we read two fun books about cooking and plums. First, we enjoyed The Welcome Cookies by Kylie Bailie, in which young Mabel visits her favourite café until it closes, and she learns to try new things. After the story, students enjoyed sequencing the events and decorating their own Welcome Cookies! We also read Mini & Milo: The Last Plum by Venita Dimos, a tale about friendship and learning to share, especially when one friend doesn’t want to (which is okay, too!).

In That Bird Has Arms by Kate & Jol Temple, Year 1 and 2 students discovered a fun and heartwarming story about embracing differences and showing kindness. The story encourages tolerance and celebrates what makes each of us unique. After reading, students enjoyed creating their own imaginative animals with human arms, sparking creativity and laughter!

Years 3 and 4 were introduced to our exciting collection of spooky stories this week. While not as scary as their older sibling, horror, these tales are just the right mix of creepy and fun. We dove into the famous Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine, one of the best-known authors of spooky stories. Don't say we didn't warn you!

Year 5 and 6 students were excited to explore the beginning of another new Standing Orders book, Escape from Cuttlefish Cove, by Rachel Jackson. In this adventure story, readers take control as they navigate through dangerous waters, encounter sneaky pirates, and make decisions that could lead to treasure or trouble. I described it as a modern-day Choose Your Adventure, and students enjoyed the beginning and the opportunity to read 42 different endings! You can listen to the author talk about her new book here.  Over the coming weeks, students are also revising how to use Oliver, the library program, to search for, reserve, and locate library resources.

Runt - Coming Soon

One thing I'm excited to do over the holidays is to catch the new children's movie Runt, based on Craig Silvey's award-winning book. Runt won the 2023 CBCA Younger Readers Book of the Year, and students have loved it so much that it's rarely on the library shelves. If you enjoyed Babe, you'll love Runt!  You can check out the movie trailer below and read the story on SORA. I highly recommend both the book and movie to our families!

Annie Shearer lives in the country town of Upson Downs with her best friend, an adopted stray dog called Runt. The two share a very special bond. After years of evading capture, Runt is remarkably fast and agile, perfect for herding runaway sheep. But when a greedy local landowner puts her family's home at risk, Annie directs Runt's extraordinary talents towards a different pursuit - winning the Agility Course Grand Championship at the lucrative Krumpets Dog Show in London. However, there is a curious catch: Runt will only obey Annie's commands if nobody else is watching. With all eyes on them, Annie and Runt must beat the odds and the fastest dogs in the world to save her farm. Runt is a heart-warming and hilarious tale of kindness, friendship, hurdles, hoops, tunnels, see-saws, being yourself and bringing out the best in others.

SORA Books of the Week

This week, SORA is spotlighting some series-ly good reads! From Kindergarten to Year 10, many of our most borrowed books come from popular series students love. Now you can enjoy these favourite series on SORA, too—don't miss out!

Oops! Did Your Book Go on an Adventure?

If your child has had a book missing for a while, overdue notices will be sent home this week. We would greatly appreciate it if you could help us track down these wandering stories—after all, even books need to come home from their adventures eventually!

If you cannot locate them, please email me at invlibrary@arm.catholic.edu.au. Lost books can be replaced or paid for at the front office. I appreciate your help with this.

Stage 3 Magic Media (AI) Created Book Covers

Stage 3 is finalising their Term 3 project, creating images using Canva’s AI Magic Media. Students wrote prompts to describe a setting (the background) and a character to make a book cover. Here are some from 6T.
