Year 5 News
AFL Gala day
This year, the grade 5s had the opportunity to attend the AFL school Gala Day run by AFL Victoria. We got to train during our lunch times before we actually went to the sports ground of Greaves reserve in Dandenong. Both the girls and boys team tried our best as we had to go against schools from the Dandenong and Frankston regions.
It was a really fun day for the girls as everyone tried their hardest and used teamwork. Once we got the hang of it we started to score points. We won and lost games but either way we still showed our Reskeys. Some of the schools we played against were older than us. Overall we all used our teamwork and communication skills. The girls won one game and lost the other three. Hopefully we get more people to come and experience this next year.
It was a real challenge for the boys as we were also the youngest team in the boys competition and we were facing year 6s that had been training their entire life. Even though our first game wasn’t the best we were resilient and put that in the past as we won our next game. There were tough games and there were games we had to put our mind to but after a lot of games we finally got a long break that would change a lot of things. During the break we had the longest kick challenge which we had won last time. This year we selected Hill to step up and take the kick and to our surprise, he actually won! Then we had our last game which we needed to win to have a chance of making it to the finals. We were losing in the closing moments and we needed at least a goal to win. Luckily when we almost had no time to spare we got a free-kick in the perfect position to give us a goal. Noah K stepped up to take it and we ended up winning by 1 point!
Overall, this experience for the grade 5s has been amazing! The AFL Gala day gave us a glimpse of interschool sports for next year. I hope lots of people sign up next year and in the future years, to sign up and give it a go! Everyone who participated in this event had the time of their lives!
Thank you for reading :)

Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee
Our school participated in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee on Thursday the 8th August from Years 3 to 6. It was a digital contest where we had to spell 30 words in a race against the clock. The contest was one of the most stressful moments of the term because some of the words were much trickier than we thought they would be. Some of the words we had to spell were ruminate, okra, waif, and slalom. By the end of it we had a lot of pleasure competing against other schools and seeing how many words we spelt correctly.

Australian Maths Competition
Earlier this term, Years 3 to 6 had a chance to compete in the AMC (Australian Maths Competition). We all went into the ⅚ area and got split up between two classrooms. Each person had one hour to complete the test, but could finish at any time they wanted.
The first few questions were easy in my opinion, but then it started to get me to think in the later ones. Questions 26 to 30 had to have a specific integer – for example, ‘How many fives are in the numbers __ to __?’, then you had to type a number between 0 and 999. I was one of the very few ones left in the past five minutes of the test. It was very hard, so I tried to figure it out until I had no time left since I wanted to get a good score.

Our Science Experiment in 5CF about Carbon Dioxide
Last week, my class and I did an exciting experiment, which revolved around carbon dioxide. To do this, each of us had to bring our own bottles. Then, we added vinegar into our bottles and got 1 balloon each. After we got our balloons, we filled them up with bicarbonate soda or baking soda. We then reached the tricky part of putting the bicarbonate soda into the balloon. Straight after we put it on our bottles, we lifted the balloon and the bicarbonate soda fell into the vinegar, instantly bubbling up and converting into carbon dioxide. Some of the bicarbonate soda was left, but each of our balloons filled up with carbon dioxide. Then, we did it again but with more bicarbonate soda and one of our balloons exploded. It was very fun and exhilarating to see each of our balloons bubble up and fill up with carbon dioxide.

We made carbon dioxide with bicarb soda and vinegar by pouring the vinegar into an empty plastic bottle and pouring it into the balloon. We had lots of fun looking at the balloon blow up bigger from the carbon dioxide in the empty bottle. The balloon did fill up with carbon dioxide, but if there is a hole in the balloon, the carbon will get released out. My prediction is that the balloon will fill up with carbon dioxide and be able to be large. To make carbon dioxide, you will need an empty plastic bottle, vinegar, bicarb soda, and a balloon. Firstly, fill the balloon with about one quarter of vinegar. Secondly, pour the bicarb soda into the balloon. Next, grab hold of the balloon and connect it to the bottle. Pour the bicarb soda into the bottle using the balloon. Finally, you can see the balloon fill up with carbon dioxide. We enjoyed it a lot and hope to do it again sometime in the future.
