Theatre Production Excursion

On August 21, the Year 8 Theatre Production students took a magical trip to Her Majesty's Theatre to experience the timeless tale of Beauty and the Beast. This classic musical tells the story of Belle, a young woman who values intelligence and kindness, and the Beast, a prince trapped under a spell that can only be broken if he learns to love and be loved in return. As their relationship develops, the musical beautifully illustrates how love, compassion, and understanding can transcend outward appearances, revealing the true beauty that lies within each of us. The story is a powerful reminder that genuine connection and empathy are what ultimately lead to personal transformation and redemption.

With memorable songs like "Be Our Guest" and "Beauty and the Beast," the production captivated the students, blending fantasy with themes of love and transformation. They were impressed not only by the outstanding performances but also by the detailed set designs, magical lighting, and elaborate costumes that brought the story to life.

Throughout the performance, the students were respectful and fully engaged, making a positive impression on behalf of Shelford. This experience gave them a valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in live theatre, connecting with the concepts they’ve been studying in class. We hope that this experience has deepened their understanding and appreciation of theatre and the performing arts.

Below are reflections from some of the students who attended.

I really enjoyed the show's costumes, sets and the performances from the actors. My favourite part was "Be Our Guest" due to its eye-catching props, incredible vocals of the actors and the amazing costumes. The music made me feel very excited and engaged due to its jumpy and fun atmosphere. The main message of the show was "don't judge a book by its cover" which was displayed by Belle's affection towards the Beast. I was surprised at how creative the costumes and sets were, like the flies in the Beast's castle and the designs of the servant’s costumes. I would definitely recommend the show to other people, because I really enjoyed it.

Beauty and the Beast was an amazing show, and I found many of the costumes very interesting. The characters who had transformed into various objects all had very detailed and well thought out costumes which helped clearly show what they were. I also really liked the music, and one of the songs that stood out to me was 'Be Our Guest'. The lighting in that scene was very bright, but also very fun to watch. I would definitely recommend this show to others.

The musical explored multiple themes of love and acceptance as well as inner beauty versus outer appearance which I liked as these are important topics that are still relevant today. The costuming and set design made the musical come to life and the colours were bright and appealing to the audience. My favourite part of the show was probably the transformation of the Beast as it included dramatic elements and was a pivotal part of the musical. A surprising moment in the show was when the Beast and Gaston were fighting as it was a scene that brought the audience to the edge of their seats. Overall, I would recommend the musical Beauty and the Beast!
