Secondary Years, Tarneit

Be Kind and Compassionate

"In a world where you can be anything, be kind."

This term I've enjoyed exploring the nine Fruits of the Spirit with staff and students. "Fruit" is the product of growth and maturity that comes from within and is poured out to others. It is something that WE GIVE to others freely, unconditionally and graciously. Throughout the Bible, the fruit of kindness is often mentioned as a command for how we should act toward others:

  • "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)
  • "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience" (Colossians 3:12)

As members of a Christian community, God calls us to be the light in the world - to love and be kind to all.

Kindness through Service

Throughout this term, Secondary Years students have been engaging in various acts of kindness through service learning.

  •  Year 9 students have been fully engaged with their Community Projects, with many visiting charity organisations throughout the local area (thank you to the many parents who have been escorting students on various visitations).
  • SLC students have been involved in a number of events in the wider community where they have contributed ideas which will help our leaders in decision-making. Most recently four SLC members attended Joanne Ryan's SRC Forum at Brinbeal Secondary School.

Acts of kindness and service are trademarks of our Christian community. Jesus Christ first showed us how to love, and in response to his unconditional graciousness to us, we respond with kindness to those around us, serving one another.

Term 4 Uniform reminders - Hats!

As we move into Term 4, students are reminded that they need to be wearing their hats at Recess and Lunchtimes. Please ensure that you have a named hat ready for the start of the term. If you need a new hat, please visit the uniform shop over the holidays.

R U OK? Day

Year 9 students celebrated RUOK Day by creating a hand poster that highlights various dialogues for checking in on others, emphasizing the importance of everyday conversations about mental well-being. The activity fostered awareness and encouraged students to be proactive in supporting each other, reinforcing the message that asking, "Are you OK?" is a small but significant step in looking out for those around us.

Year 7 Visual Art

Year 7 students learn about watercolour painting as part of their Visual Arts curriculum. Focusing their work on a selected nature theme, students have learned how to apply washes and blend colours using watercolour and various watercolour painting techniques such as ‘wet on dry’, ‘wet on wet’, ‘dry brushing’, ‘blending’, ‘splatter’ and ‘blotting’. Through this process, students have developed a deeper understanding of how to represent natural elements such as plants, animals, and landscapes. Each student has chosen a specific theme from nature, allowing them to experiment with these techniques while expressing their individual artistic vision. The unit emphasises creativity, technical skill, and the connection between art and the natural world.

Year 8 Roller Coaster Project

As part of their MYP summative assessment, Year 8 students were tasked with designing and building roller coasters, a hands-on project that allowed them to explore both creativity and physics in a real-world application. Throughout the process, the students were highly self-motivated, incorporating innovative variations to enhance the excitement and create thrilling rides. Their engagement went beyond meeting the task's basic requirements, as they actively experimented with different structures, speeds, and turns to make their roller coasters not just functional, but exhilarating experiences for their peers.
