Kindness

At GNLC, the ‘fruit of the Spirit’, Kindness, is woven through all that we do. For Christians, kindness is demonstrated through the expression of love and is always a response to God’s love. It is a way of being that leads to inner peace. Love and kindness flow from the heart and manifests itself in caring and respectful thoughts, words and actions. A major feature of the Christian Studies curriculum in Primary Years is students learning about how much God loves them and that our kindness to others is modelled on that.

In the College values, Respect is kindness in action. We aim, in all relationships to be considerate and mindful, despite the differences we may have with others. This is seen through the way we speak to, with and about each other.

In the International Baccalaureate Learner Profiles, a set of attributes that develop international mindedness in our young people, Caring is another expression of Kindness.

Over their Primary Years students learn that:

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

Teachers (and parents) know that the best way to do this is through our children seeing this modelled. They are always watching what we do, listening to what we say and seeing if our actions match that. This is a huge responsibility that we take very seriously, but also know that we do not do perfectly all the time.

Aspiring to be kind, show love, be respectful and caring is an important part of being in the Good News Community. I have the privilege of seeing so many examples of this every day as I interact with our parents and students.

Year 3 Jewish Museum Excursion

Last Tuesday, the Year 3 students went on an excursion to the Jewish Museum of Australia as part of their learning in Christian Studies.  At the museum, students viewed artefacts such as scrolls of the Torah and learned about Jewish religious festivals such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They also visited a synagogue and discovered that while visiting the synagogue, boys had to wear a kippah or hat to cover their heads, as a sign of respect. Finally, they learned about customs related to the celebration of the Shabbat meal, a special meal eaten by the Jewish community every Friday evening as part of their faith. The students were inquirers and thinkers as they asked questions and made connections to their own cultural heritage.

Year 4 Camp

On Monday the 9 September, the Year 4’s went on a bus to Oasis Camp and we came back on the 11September which was Wednesday. Camp was so amazing. The fun activities we did were Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Candle Making, Laser Tag and the Giant Swing. My favourite activity was the Giant Swing because I faced my fears of heights and really liked how you could pull the rope to make the person move in the air. My favourite activity was Kayaking because I could experience being in the water alone and I experienced getting towed by another kayak for the first time. My cabin was special because I got to learn more about my friends. The learner profile that I showed at camp was Communicator because I made new friends by talking and engaging with others. At camp I showed the learner profile of open minded because I was willing to try everything at camp.

Ayaan Nair (4C) and Nishka Rana (4C)

My favourite activities was candle making, and the giant swing. I loved candle making because it boosted my imagination to create it, and I enjoyed dipping it in the wax and water. I loved the giant swing because it was really fun going up it reminded me of a rollercoaster.

Viha (4D)

I showed the Learner Profile of being Open-Minded when I tried the big swing even though I was really nervous. I was also Open-Minded when I was not happy with all the students in my cabin but I got used to it and tried to sleep.

Vaani (4D)

Camp taught me to be independent when I was sleeping, because normally I would be dependent on my brother saying good night to me so I could fall asleep but my brother couldn't come on camp so I had to go to sleep without him saying that.

Aarambha Jha (4B)

My favourite activity at camp Oasis was kayaking because I liked being on water and controlling my own kayak which I had never done before.

Divyam Patel (4B)

I felt proud of myself for finishing the night walk on the first night. I'm not used going into the forest and I felt scared, but I had a parent helper behind me who was waiting for us which made me feel calm.

Samaira Dhawan (4B)

I showed I was a risk taker at camp when I went kayaking. At first I didn't want to go but when I saw everybody else having so much fun, I decided to give it a try.

Venisha Shah (4B)

The most challenging part of camp was the Giant Swing, because heights are my number one fear and the Giant Swing is so high it really tested that. Also, because it was really fast which made me even more scared.

Rohan Motae (4A)

The most challenging part of part was Kayaking because it was hard to paddle evenly with my best friend at the back, and the instructor was telling me to go left but somehow I was going right, it was so hard to steer.

Kaya Kapoor (4A)

Year 4 camp taught me to be independent by cleaning up after myself and learning to accept being away from home for a few days.

Khushveer Sandhu (4A)

Camp has taught me that you don't have to do everything with your best friend or a buddy. You can have fun by yourself as well.
