Automotive students in top gear at WorldSkills
First-year Automotive VETDSS student Karlo.A., from Highvale Secondary College recently participated in the regional World Skills competition, selected among a group of talented VETDSS students. Karlo’s passion for cars began in childhood, inspired by his father's introduction to them. By enrolling in the Certificate II in Automotive Preparation (pre-apprenticeship) course as part of his VCE subjects, Karlo is gaining valuable knowledge, skills, and industry connections while working towards his VCE and ATAR.
During the competition, students showcased essential skills in basic servicing, diagnostics, and repairs, racing against the clock to complete tasks efficiently and safely, while adhering to specific work instructions. A panel of automotive experts evaluated each task based on industry-standard criteria, ensuring that students learn best practices to prepare for future careers in the automotive field. To help students excel, automotive trainers dedicated four Saturdays to provide additional training leading up to the event.
Mark Egan, Automotive Coordinator at Box Hill Institute, emphasised the importance of competitions like WorldSkills for students' future success. “The automotive industry is evolving rapidly, so these students need to be lifelong learners, ready to adapt their skills to new technologies. WorldSkills fosters their confidence and enhances their problem-solving abilities under pressure,” Mr. Egan stated.
All competitors will receive a certificate from WorldSkills and a small toolkit to recognize their participation. Finalists will be announced later this year, with the top three students from the eastern Melbourne region advancing to the Victorian WorldSkills competition.
Highvale Secondary College wish Karlo the best of luck and congratulate him on his hard work and dedication in the WorldSkills Competition!
