Investigating Rates of Reaction

This term, our Year 10 Science students have been exploring the fascinating world of chemical reactions and the factors that affect their speed.  As part of their final assessment, students designed and conducted their own experiments investigating the rate of reaction.

Working in small groups, students developed a scientific question, planned a fair test and carried out practical experiments in the lab.  Their investigations focused on one of three key variables — temperature, surface area or concentration — and how changing these factors influences the rate at which a chemical reaction occurs.

Students carefully recorded their observations and measurements and they will now present their findings in a poster-style practical report.  This task assesses their ability to plan, conduct, analyse and communicate scientific investigations — key skills for success in senior science.

The practical sessions have been filled with bubbling reactions, changing colours and plenty of curiosity.  It’s been wonderful to see students take ownership of their learning and apply their understanding of chemical processes in a hands-on and engaging way.
