From the 1/2 Classrooms

Coding and Robotics Incursion
In Week 2, our Grade 1 and 2 students took part in an exciting Coding and Robotics incursion led by Oscar from Mad About Science. Students began by thinking creatively about how robots can help us in our daily lives -from cleaning and cooking to playing and exploring.
During this hands-on workshop, students worked in small teams to build and program real robots using a unique pen-and-card-based coding system by AIKIRO. For many, this was their first time using this kind of programming, and they rose to the challenge wonderfully!
Using Lego-like pieces, students carefully followed step-by-step instructions to build their chosen model - an aeroplane, scooter, or face. This task required patience, precision, and teamwork, and it was fantastic to see students collaborating, problem-solving, and supporting each other along the way.
Once their robots were built, students began coding - creating their sequences with pen and cards to bring their creations to life. The excitement in the room was contagious when robots began moving and responding to their programs. It was wonderful to see the smiles and sense of achievement on students’ faces.
Here's what our students thought about the incursion...
Coming Up in Grade 1 and 2...
Literacy
- We are continuing our focus on procedural texts, exploring how to write clear and detailed instructions.
- In the next few weeks, we’ll keep working with our mentor text Wombat Stew, connecting it to fun, hands-on procedural writing activities across reading and writing sessions.
Numeracy
- Students are exploring location and direction, learning how to give and follow instructions to move people and objects - a perfect link to our Robot Buddies unit!
- We are also revising addition and subtraction strategies, including known facts to 20, the jump strategy, partitioning, and compensation.
Reminders
- Whole School Production Night: Monday, 10th November
- Swimming Program (Week 7): We are looking for parent volunteers to assist. If you’re able to help, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Thank you for your continued support!
