From the Foundation Classroom

Urban Upcycle Incursion

On Monday 20th of October, Nicole from Urban Upcycle incursions came to Boroondara Park Primary to run a creative craft making activity with the Foundation students. The purpose of this incursion was to introduce the students to a variety of clean and repurposed craft items that were made from different materials. Students were also introduced to different craft tools and adhesives.

At the beginning of the session, students were shown the different materials, tools and adhesives, such as: glue sticks, a hot glue gun, sticky tape and masking tape. Nicole explained that some materials might need a stronger adhesive, such as: hot glue or masking tape, to stick together. She suggested to the students that if they used an adhesive to join two materials together, and they don't stick together, then they might need to try and use a different adhesive. Students could independently use the glue sticks and tape. If they needed to join materials together with the hot glue gun, they had to ask an adult for assistance.

Students then began to make their own creations out of a vast supply of recycled materials. Everyone was engaged and worked hard to come up with their own individual, creative piece.

FKJ students had a wonderful time constructing these marvellous creations. They learnt how to join different materials together by using the most appropriate adhesive, as well as how to reduce the production of waste through practising the Sustainability Rs, such as Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Repurpose.

Coming up in the Foundation Classroom

Literacy:

  • FKJ Writing Focus

This week in FKJ, our young writers are learning how to use a picture stimulus to plan and write their own narrative pieces. Together, we are exploring the key elements of a narrative — characters, setting, problem, and solution.

To begin, students are shown a picture stimulus and, as a class, we brainstorm ideas inspired by the image. Students then return to their tables to plan their narratives, either through drawings or by jotting down key words. Once their plans are complete, they use them as a guide to begin writing their stories. Throughout the process, students are supported to develop their ideas, add detail, and bring their stories to life.

Numeracy:

  • Students are continuing to work on the new Numeracy concept of Subtraction
  • Students will continue to investigate the Measurement of Mass. They will be discovering what objects in the classroom are heavy and light and will be using a pan balance to compare the mass of two objects.
  • This week, students will be exploring position and location by describing where they and different objects are in relation to others within familiar spaces. They will be introduced to positional language such as behind, under, next to, and around.

To support this learning, students will be using a Bee-Bot robot — a programmable floor robot designed for young learners. Through hands-on activities, they will learn how to program the Bee-Bot to move around a space, demonstrating their understanding of positional language in an engaging and interactive way.
