NAPLAN results at BPPS

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) statewide results were released last term, with Victoria ranked as first or second in 18 of the 20 tests for Year 3, 5, 7 and 9.

In Years 3 and 5, Victoria ranked first or second in all 10 tests.

Our Year 3 and 5 families received their child's individual reports last term, and our staff have reviewed the data and worked through the results. They are using them to build on the specific learning programs for individual students and year levels. The results also impact our approach to whole school programs.

NAPLAN continues to measure student achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling and grammar and punctuation and are presented in four proficiency levels:

  • exceeding
  • strong
  • developing
  • needs additional support.

The NAPLAN results are a culmination of the teaching and learning program provided by all teachers at Boroondara Park PS. The results of our Year 3 and 5 students are impacted by programs from previous years, and with a focus on whole school approaches to learning we are continually aiming to improve and build on student learning opportunities.

Within our community the school is known for educating the whole child and at times we are told the academic focus is not as good as other schools. The results of NAPLAN indicate this is a misunderstanding and Boroondara Park PS does provide a strong academic program for our students.

Overall, our students have performed very well and have made very good growth in their learning.

In Year 3 our students outperformed the State, the Network and similar schools in Reading.

The Year 5 students outperformed the State, the Network and Similar schools in Writing and Numeracy.

Across both year levels in all areas our results exceeded the State results by an average of 14.5%.

YEAR 3 RESULTS

Year 3 Reading – 89% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level. Students who did not achieve in the exceeding or strong proficiency levels are being supported through targeted teaching.

Year 3 Writing – 91% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level. Students who did not achieve in the exceeding or strong proficiency levels are being supported through targeted teaching.

Year 3 Spelling - 74% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level. Spelling continues to be an area of focus for the school and we are in the third year of running the SMART Spelling Program. We can see improvement in our results as they are significantly better than the results in 2024 - 56%, and 2023 - 64%.

Year 3 Numeracy - 83% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level. Students who did not achieve in the exceeding or strong proficiency levels are being supported through targeted teaching.

Year 3 Grammar and Punctuation - 72% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level. Grammar and Punctuation is also a focus area for our school where we are continuing to review and improve our teaching programs. Similarly to spelling, our results have significantly improved this year.

In 2024, 48% of students were in exceeding and strong and in 2023, 64% of students were in exceeding and strong.

YEAR 5 RESULTS

Year 5 Reading - 83% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level.

Year 5 Writing - 89% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level.

Year 5 Spelling - 76% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level.

Year 5 Numeracy - 90% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level.

Year 5 Grammar and Punctuation - 79% of students were in the exceeding or strong proficiency level.

Like in Year 3, students who did not achieve in the exceeding or strong proficiency levels are being supported through targeted teaching.

The Grade 5 students have shown improvement in all 5 areas of NAPLAN testing as indicated in the table below from 2023 when they were in Grade 3, to now in 2025. In Spelling, Numeracy and Grammar and Punctuation, results show a significant improvement.

Share your views to help make our school safer

The Department of Education is inviting parents and carers to take part in an online survey.

The survey seeks views on how the department can best protect school communities from harmful behaviour by parents and carers, and other adults:

  • on school grounds and other places school activities happen
  • online including social media.

Harmful behaviours can include abusive, aggressive and disruptive behaviours, including on social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

The survey will help the department:

  • better understand community attitudes around this issue
  • seek input on whether stronger protections are needed for school communities.

The survey closes at 11:59 pm on Monday 10 November 2025.

At Boroondara Park PS, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for the entire school community. We support ongoing efforts to address harmful behaviour by adult members of our school community, including online.

I encourage you to share your views by taking part in the survey.

To access the survey, refer to Keeping school staff safe onsite and online on the Engage Victoria website.

School Community Safety Order Scheme: statutory review

A report and recommendations from the statutory review of the School Community Safety Order Scheme are now available.

While the majority of parents and carers work well with schools to resolve concerns, sometimes there is harmful behaviour affecting our school staff and students. The scheme allows principals and other authorised persons in Victorian schools to make School Community Safety Orders to stop or limit parents, carers and other adults who behave in harmful, threatening or abusive ways towards people in the school community.

For more information on the review, refer to Independent statutory review into the School Community Safety Order Scheme

For more information on the scheme, refer to the School Community Safety Orders webpage.

Respectful behaviours in the school community

For more information on the shared roles of parents, carers and school staff in creating a positive environment for learning, refer to the department’s Respectful Behaviours within the School Community Policy webpage.

Interpreter service for calling the school

This week we sent out information relating to an interpreter service you can use when calling the school. There is a simple step by step process to make a call to the school using a telephone interpreter.

Volunteer induction and registration

Thank you to those parents who have completed the induction and registration so they can volunteer at BPPS in 2025.

A reminder - All volunteers must undertake the induction and register to be involved in school activities.
