Sullivan Robey (Year 12) Shines in Coates Talent League Grand Final

Mazenod College is proud to celebrate the achievements of Year 12 student Sullivan Robey, whose performance in the Coates Talent League Grand Final has further strengthened his AFL Draft prospects.

On Saturday 20 September, Sullivan helped steer the Eastern Ranges to their first premiership since 2013 with a standout performance at IKON Park. He finished the match with 13 disposals and a team-high four goals, proving instrumental in the 83–68 victory over the Sandringham Dragons.

Sullivan’s strong second half of the season has culminated in his elevation from the state draft combine to the national combine, where Australia’s most promising young footballers undergo a series of physical and skill-based tests in front of AFL recruiters and senior coaches. His rise has also been highlighted by AFL media as one of the most exciting stories in this year’s draft pool.

Mazenod’s connection to the premiership success extended beyond Sullivan’s on-field performance. Mr Blake Beatty, Mazenod’s High Performance Programs Coach, also serves as Head of High Performance at the Eastern Ranges and played a key role in preparing the team for their premiership campaign. In addition, Ms Sophia Ikosidekas, a second-year Mazenod sports staff member, was part of the successful coaching team for the Eastern Ranges U18 Girls, who claimed victory over the Dandenong Stingrays.

Sullivan’s journey is an inspiring example of commitment, resilience, and performance under pressure. We congratulate him on this outstanding achievement and look forward to following his next steps in the lead-up to the 2025 AFL Draft.

Nornie Bero Visit

Last Friday, our Year 9 Food Technology students welcomed Nornie Bero, founder and CEO of Mabu Mabu, for an inspiring session on Indigenous food culture and storytelling through cuisine.

Originally from the Komet Tribe of the Meriam people in the Torres Strait, Nornie has been a professional chef for over 25 years and is passionate about celebrating native ingredients and First Nations traditions.

Students began the lesson with an episode of her SBS series Island Echoes, before hearing firsthand about her journey, her culinary roots, and the importance of food as a way to connect culture and community.

A sincere thank you to Nornie for sharing her time, wisdom and warmth with our students.

Celebrating Reading Lunch 2025

Congratulations to this year’s top Mazenod College readers including those who completed the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge, those who borrowed and read more than 30 books from the Library and those who actively participated in Book Club.

Reading reduces stress, makes us feel more connected, improves empathy and can provide readers with an increased sense of belonging. Studies with school students have shown that reading can lead to a reduction in depression and anxiety and lead to improvement in students’ optimism and positive emotions. Reading before bed helps readers sleep and Mazenod’s best readers are well represented in our VCE high achievers.(https://australiareads.org.au/news/benefits-reading-mental-health/)

Our top readers were rewarded with a certificate and enjoyed a few slices of pizza at our Celebrating Reading Lunch 2025.

Year 8 Outdoor Education

Horse Riding, Archery, and Mountainboarding

Our Year 8 students embraced the outdoors to begin Term 4, taking part in horse riding, archery and mountainboarding.

These activities challenged students to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence and work together, all while enjoying Victoria’s fresh country air!
