Being Responsible at St Joseph the Worker
This term, our school focus is on the behaviour disposition of Responsible which means taking ownership of our actions, making a plan to fix mistakes, and learning from experiences so we are better prepared next time.
Being responsible doesn’t mean being perfect; it means recognising when something hasn’t gone as expected and having the courage to make it right. Importantly, being responsible is about learning and improving, not staying in the “shame zone.” We want students to see that mistakes are opportunities to grow, rather than reasons to feel embarrassed or defeated. When students reflect on their choices and take steps to improve, they build resilience, honesty, and confidence as learners and friends. At St Joseph the Worker, we support our students to demonstrate responsibility by learning from mistakes and striving to do better every day.
Parents can do this at home too by encouraging children to talk about their day and reflect on the choices they made. When your child takes ownership of their actions - whether by apologising, correcting a mistake, or making a better choice next time acknowledge and celebrate it. When challenges arise, help your child think through what they could do differently or how they might make amends, considering how their actions affect others. Simple conversations like these show children that mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow, and that taking responsibility is a sign of empathy, growth, and self-awareness.
Responsible Pet Incursion
Recently, our students attended a Responsible Pet Incursion, where they learned how to care for and respect animals. They were very excited to visited by the gentle and friendly Zaria.
Being responsible around pets means handling them gently, following instructions from adults, feeding and watering them correctly, keeping them safe, respecting their need for rest, and helping to keep their environment clean. Students also learned to understand pets’ behaviour so they can respond appropriately. By practising these habits, students not only help keep pets safe and happy but also develop important skills such as empathy, patience, and consideration - qualities that reflect our school disposition of being responsible and can be applied in all areas of life.
The PBL Pod: Positive Behaviour Leaders Video Podcast
Our Positive Behaviour Leaders are launching The PBL Pod, a video podcast that will focus on the behaviour disposition of Responsible this term. The podcast will include:
- Short weekly episodes (3–5 minutes) highlighting a key aspect of responsibility.
- Interviews with classmates, teachers, or parents about how they demonstrate responsibility.
- Storytelling: sharing real-life scenarios where students showed responsible behaviour.
- Tips & Challenges: providing practical ways for any listeners to practise responsibility at school or home.
Keep an eye out for the first episode soon! Working hard on their first episode.
